Thanks! It will be interesting if it stays in my pond. They showed up out of the blue last spring and didn’t stay long. They didn’t over winter so they must’ve come really early in the spring to be in the pond. And when I say pond I’m talking about a 300 gallon inground stock tank. I find it interesting how so many toads and frogs just come and go. Some come and stay until they die and some don’t stay long at all. It’s also amazing how many tadpoles you can have and maybe all but one disappear.

How do frogs normally survive during your winters? They're obviously adapted to it. Some tadpoles are cannibals, so it's not just outside predators that can reduce their numbers. The bigger/voracious ones reduce the competition for food, as well as getting "extras" in the process. It tends to be more common where they have a shorter season, or desert climates where waterholes are more ephemeral.
