Pots with flowers

I like yellow flowers with the blue, like the toy truck. Can you plant in the soil or is it compacted?

I’m thinking yellow too, need some drought resistant plants. The soil is pretty compact and always covered with pineneedles

Flowers, yellow or red. If it’s practical, paint the handrail so it sort of forms a leading path drawing people to the door. For that matter, consider some planting’s leading to the door (not just at the door), like flower boxes along the handrails.

At night, lighting. Something subtle, and not too glitzy. I’m thinking just solar led “fairy lights” in some of those planters.

Have you considered painting the front door? Maybe yellow? And some deck railing flower planters. This planter is just an example but lots of other ones out there.

I think we all have the same ideas; trailing to the house planters with grasses in pots, red geraniums and yellow pansies look great, lifting along the walkway then two tall planters with evergreen plants and yellow flowers ;probably annuals). Something many people don’t think about is painting the decking. Putting down a flower stencil and filling it in the red and yellow flowers leading to a yellow door with grasses along the side in pots would look fabulous.

The style of your house is fun so I'd also look for a different light fixture by the door as the one you have is too traditional.

I really liked the railing planters suggested by @tedbixby and I agree that you should paint your front door. I was thinking orange, seeing as it is the complementary colour to blue (as well as being a happy and energizing colour). I would suggest a coordinating coloured mat for in front of the door at least, or even an a larger, outdoor rug in a graphic pattern. I would also consider adding a modern-style chair and some freestanding, planters too. Your home is lovely and the location looks so serene. Good luck!

Some rugs to consider...

I am guessing it is a vacation home. If rain is sufficient to keep the plants alive when the place is not occupied, I would look for good-sized plants native to that habitat. If there are no native flowers in the nearby nursery, then a combination of textures and various greenery colors may suffice.

And resistant from the deer, moose, elk or whatever else is lurking about that can eat those flowers. Which may not be too easy especially if it has to tolerate shade, too.

In addition to all the other great suggestions, I would paint the deck/walkway leading to your front door. Since your door and trim are white, I'd paint the deck white to match.

Flowers are so seasonal...and require upkeep ...I would go for a more permanent way to highlight your entry...perhaps a very colorful door....or a couple built in benches by the door and railing with painted seating....maybe a colorful stain or paint on your decks...this leaves the easy option... for plants ...of just buying a couple annual flowering hanging plants...water for flowers all summer...and just replace every spring....

Loving all the ideas, I wanted to paint the deck white but the house is covered with pine trees etc and that leaves a lot of sap on the deck so I chose a dark color. This is a vacation home like felizlady was guessing:) Here is the Before picture

Agreed, planters will do the trick for adding interest and potentially a pop of color.
