I can see why you love the floor but it does look very empty. For me it looks like a room of two halves and a rug would unite the space. Alternatively a coffee table would be good, or pull the sofa out into the space a little.

A sheepskin or cowhide might look good and they wouldn’t cover too much of the floor??

I would add a glass coffee table to bring the room together without hiding the floor!

It's that big expanse of floor that draws your eye to the floor . Agree with all of the above but it does seem a shame to cover it up. Another option if you don't want a coffee table could be a furniture shift with the sofa facing the fireplace. A console/sofa table behind it would conceal the back of it and give you somewhere else to put some of the photo frames you have on the fireplace

definitely. You'll still see the floor but you won't feel like you're living in an unfinished space

Unless you're going for a minimalist look, which I don't think you are judging by your more traditional style furniture etc, I would opt for a (large) rug.

It's a great looking floor and I'm sure it will still look great with one (or two...).

Thanks everyone. We have a baby so a glass coffee table or console isn’t practical at the moment (hence all the pictures up high... and no plant on the side table) my husband has been desperate for a cowhide rug so perhaps I could be persuaded. We also have 3 cats so I need to be mindful of that.

what a stunning room. I would certainly put a rug down, it should complement the floor, so don't worry about covering it up. There are some fabulous rug dealers on ebay who specialise in vintage tribal rugs, that would be my choice.

Hi there Louise, what a beautiful sunny room and I agree the floor is stunning. But, yes a rug is needed to unite all the furniture, you could add a coffee table too. As an option the sofa could be moved opposite the fireplace and swap the footstool to the other end of the sofa and then the two chairs will sit where the sofa currently is though set in to the room a bit more.. this then gives a good rectangular space for the rug to fill. And not to worry there is still plenty of floor to be seen!

For the style of the rug; I would suggest something abstract with colour.. I would be happy to put together some options for you. Message me through my Houzz page..

Your flooring is beautiful, but a rug could look great! How about something a little lighter in colour to ensure the flooring still stands out? Maybe something that plays on the bluey/aqua tones in your accessories? :)

At the moment the space looks in need of something, a rug would be perfect but a coffee table would also help fill the space out more. The suggested rug from celerygirl looks perfect, it has incorporated all the accents from the paintings on the wall and unites the room perfectly.

Your light fixture is so beautiful and quirky! Having a glass top coffee table beneath it would look wonderful in the evening with the reflection of the lights! Not to mention, during the day you outdoor light will still fill the space through the glass.
