Very nicely done and a huge improvement!! Did you do all the work yourself or did you contract out the masonry work? If completely DIY, I am even more impressed!!

thanks, gardengal! Don't bee too impressed ;) We contracted out for tree removal (removed 22 huge trees!) excavation, masonry and landscaping (decorative plantings, sod, etc.). I did the design/layout and worked closely with the landscapers on planting decisions, etc. The larger rocks that extend the retaining wall were all sourced from our yard. They were dug up from our ground when we excavated and re-purposed to extend the wall.

Still, a wonderful job and you are completely justified with any compliments about your participation in the process :-)

It is classic and elegant. Congrats on an excellent collaboration with contractor. May I ask how many acres? 22 trees is a lot. Glad you weren’t iintimidated into keeping trees that are ‘in the way’

Thanks Bossyvossy! It's actually 3/4 of an acre. I think it appears larger due to the two levels. Yes, we went around and tagged trees for removal, and while it was difficult to see them go, we wanted to open sightlines while maintaining privacy. Due to the equipment involved, we knew the tree removal piece was a project we would do only do once, so we were careful to be sure to get it right!
