HI -- First thing , if you can , go and get a big upholstered storage ottoman for the little guys toys . It can be used as a coffee table until you don't need it anymore then it goes in the child's room or use it against a wall as a bench or as seating at the table . If the tree is fake then it should go . A good wall color to start with is "Revere Pewter " by Benjamin Moore paints -- great color can't go wrong . Carry the color right through to the connecting room . If you can,- go with lighter colored drapes (washable )and go full height and as wide on the wall as you can go, with grommet top on a big rod. The rod you have may be fine if it will go longer. You can still have blinds with them. The drapes you have now are too dark. When the time comes for getting your new furniture don't get a matched set and don't get a love seat . Just a more tailored sofa and two matching lounge chairs . If you get them in a neutral fabric they will stand the test of time . For art and accent décor go bigger and less of. Now for the TV ,-- find a wall TV display (Ikea has several) cabinet or hang the TV on the wall and have a nice low dresser/console cabinet under. Then some side tables and lamps and maybe a floor lamp (adjustable). The tables don't have to match in style ,just in the same color tones . Matching furniture is really better not done today.. Just the two lounge chairs can match in color or pattern and style .

With the carpet being blue-grey do you think light blue curtains would be too matchy-matchy? And patterned or no pattern?

HI -- Yes. you could do light blue drapes and or a pattern , but instead of pre - thinking , just go out and see what you can find that appeals to you. Your furniture is plain (no pattern) so anything lighter would work but take a paint sample with you for reference . They make wonderful redi-made drapes now. I think you might need about six panels for that window.

Is it me, or your room need more lighting? But I agree with what left47 said. Clear out the toys first, and add side tables, and lighter drapes. Maybe a lighter rug color in the middle to give it some contrast.

Since the carpet is blue/grey, then the Revere Pewter paint color will go with it, although I would probably go for a lighter shade in the same color card. Then I would find draperies with a blue, tan and grey print. Check out smithandnoble.com or potterybarn.com, or various online fabric sites and have the drapes made by a local workroom.

One way I got my grandson (he's 5) to understand the living room was kind of off limits was to tell him that the living room was Mommy's playroom and his room or the family room was his playroom. Hopefully, all that work I just did at my daughter's will stay nice for awhile.

I would say it depends. The idea is to give the floor some color, lighter prefer. If you like colors, then go for it. If not, you can match the couch color in the same family tone, but not exact same. Rug is the easiest to switch if you don't like what you have.

LOVE the beagle sleeping on the back of the couch like a cat :) That's what my Jack Russell used to do all the time.

I would replace the blinds with a silhouette type blind it will really soften the space up.
