Thank you! Do you think I should put anything on the empty wall? I was thinking a long but very thin console table and two balustrade style lamps? Not sure if that would work though and then on the wall where the mirror is -- a bench (once again something super thin)-- the room is tight and I tried to put a buffet on the wall where the mirror is... but the room instantly got smaller & cluttered... Thoughts? Then I was thinking of accenting the browns (since theres a brownish mirror) with an accent on the table and then accents on that shelf --- and possibly some prints that are neutral with browns and creams?

With the existing window decor, I would suggest adding some stationary(or not) panels. Add a pop of color and/or texture!

I like the idea of draperies - also, I'd swap out the items in the buffet for some stoneware or pottery. While centered on the wall, the four pictures look a bit far apart to me - maybe space them closer together; and, lower the mirrow a bit. Not sure you need something along the mirror wall - maybe a corner hutch to add some weight to that side of the room?

The photos of family members starting at me while dining would really put me off. Reminds me of my grandmother's guest bedroom where stern photos of the generations past hung loomingly over the bed and scared the ____ out of my cousin and me when we had to sleep there. That said, you need places for the eyes to rest. Not every wall needs to be covered. With properly hung drapery, those walls flanking the window will shrink. The mirror doesn't seem to be reflecting anything beautiful or interesting. If your family don't mind watching themselves eat, I would hang it vertically where the four photos are so it would pick up and double the reflection of the chandelier, which, I agree, needs whiter/brighter bulbs. Perhaps the six photos would be nice lining the upstairs hallway to the master. Hang them one hand's breadth apart. Find some "pretties" to put in the shelves. Looks to be mostly storage for photo binders to me. Unless this is a room where the family gathers regularly to spread out the binders and peruse the photos, I don't think that's really appropriate for a dining room. You could always bring them in from another location when table space is needed for sharing them with others.

Haha - Those aren't family photos -- They came with the frames -- those will be changed... as well as the shelf decor...

    Thanks!

I like the prints, but I think 6 is overkill. Do you have something tall like a grandfather clock to put in that recess by the stairs? I don't usually like time pieces in the dining room, but that's all I can envision there right now. I think it calls for something tall as a counterbalance to the built-in shelves on the left.

The art in general and the mirror are both over scaled for the room...creating an imbalance from some walls being stuffed while others are empty....the big thick black frames are overwhelming the space..in color and size...

If the table and rug can be moved slightly ...to center on the window better....that would free up space for a nice console table under the mirror...then ...curtains ...sheers....drapes ... on the window would reduce the wall size enough to relieve the need to have anything but art on that wall.....the floral prints in the big frames may work if you hang them separately...and choose a sleek console table in black for under the mirror to tie in with the dominant black frames

I think i would hang the mirror in the centre of the wall, opposite where it is now and arrange similar prints on either side of the doorway, couple ideas below.

We think the bare wall doesn't need anything once you hang window treatments it will make a statement all it's own. However we do think this room needs some reworking. Is it possible to take down the two other frames that are like the other four? That wall seems to be overflowing.

I like your room a lot. It doesn't seem like any other furniture would fit, except if you could fit a buffet in the recessed area by the stairs. How wide is that space? Also, you definitely need drapes - maybe velvet to add to the classic feel. Your rug seems too small - what are the overall dimensions of this room, and what size is the existing rug?

    Love your moldings and built-in.

I agree Re:-change the yellow lightbulbs because (perhaps it is my monitor) your walls photograph as though they have a "baby diaper" color. (My apologies)

The mirror appears to be floating too high. I'd ground it by hanging it 8 inches lower and placing a buffet table below it.....

Drapes on a rod that is much wider than the window, will widen your window further and fill the walls flanking the window

I would like to see the four frames hung closer to one another. So, they become a unit, as opposed to how they are now- spaced separate relative to the wall.

Window treatments will make the room more cozy.
Art will make the room more interesting.
You have several large bare areas....go to four or five places to look for paintings and prints which you like. You can have a theme (landscape, seascape, cityscape, modern or traditional styles, mountains, gardens, desert, ocean, boating, architecture, travel) or you can select several unrelated items.
Measure each large bare area and take a phone-photo of the areas so you will be able to visualize the art pieces against those walls.
Plan to frame each piece in a similar color/style frame. The frames don't have to match, but, IMO, they should be similar in color, width and style in the same room.
Places to look for art: art stores, art fairs, HomeGoods, Michaels, furniture stores, thrift shops, antique shops, craft fairs, estate sales....for example.

Paint vent cover and switchplate the same color as the walls.

Yes, I would put a console table ...you can use it for the dishes you might serve buffet style ...two candlestick and it's a beautiful room after you hang a few small paintings....and a larger on the wall across the staircase . Long pulled back curtains on both sides ...! Nice room !

Yes to full length drapes to add color and softness.
    Yes to whiter bulbs.
Yes to shifting the rug to center on window.
Yes to narrow buffet on left.
Yes to styling the built in shelves with pretty things - glass & pottery etc.
Overall, the room is unbalanced with all the visual weight on the built-in side, so some artwork and color on the opposite wall will balance things out.
And waffling but yes: thinking there are too many bold black frames.

I personally love a small wall shelf well curated with a few beautiful pieces.

You can also put a small real plant. Though how high you place this shelf is rather important. I would say try around 48" from floor.

yes to white lights and drapes.
