I over watered plum and peach tree help

I just planted several fruit trees in south Texas in Laredo. I planted lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, peach and plum. thd peach and plum were the largest trees. The citrus trees are doing wonderful, but a week later after planting the plum and peach their leaves started drying up and have half way fallen off. I went to the nursery and they guessed I was watering too much. I bought a water meter to stick in the ground. The clay soil apparently doesnt allow the water to drain and I watered once a day by water hose for 5 days Before I realized what I had done. I haven’t watered in two days and the gage is still reading at a 9/10. do you think they will recover? Can I do anything for them? I’m so sad.

    You can dig up the tree and check to see if it is in standing water. If there is root damage trim off the part of the root that is damaged. Work in dry compost to dry up some of the water and replant. Remember to check the readings and water accordingly.

    I looked at the weather for Laredo and it shows to be over 100 this week. If you bought the trees in containers, all the roots are still in the potting mix, not the clay on the outside. I would think you would need to water with at least a gallon or two of water each day with the weather that hot. They water them at least daily at the nursery.

    Moisture meters can be very inaccurate, especially the ones costing less than $100. Just stick you finger in the ground an inch or two. If that area is dry time to water again. But in your case the clay really has not bearing on moisture since the roots have not grown there yet.

    What you can do to see if tree is getting enough water. In the mid morning to early afternoon, when the leaves are drooping, apply about 2 gallons of water slowly around the base of the tree. Make sure the water is going into the potting mix, not the surrounding clay. If after an hour or 2 the tree leave perk up, the tree was starved for moisture. If there is not change, then I am wrong and tree is probably getting too much water. Do not let the tree completely dry out or the root hairs will die and tree will not be able to get water, and tree will eventually die.

    It is easy with a hose just to wet the top inch or 2 of soil and the rest will remain dry. That is not enough to keep the trees alive. Water slowly and deeply.

    Thank you for taking the time. Yeah I didn’t think there was any way I could be over watering bc of the heat, but around the hole I dug for the tree it’s straight clay. So we mixed tree potting soil and half existing dirt to mix it. But I guess the clay is not letting any of the water in the tree hole out at all. I’m used to watering my trees in the Fort Worth area on slower hose for a couple of hours. That’s why I was in disbelief that it was too wet. But the dirt around the tree and in the dirt mound around the tree is still moist. And my electric water indicator says the same. Yes it’s under 100$ But better than nothing. I guess I’ve never experienced clay dirt. It’s like a clay pot with out a drain or something? The temperatures are blazing here so this seems so bizarre. But my trees lost almost all their leaves and are in shock or dying and I want to save themmmm. It has to be the water?

    You might try transplanting them to a raised bed. Brake up the clay underneath and add good loamy soil, about 12 inches deep. A 4X8 foot is best, but even a 4X4 might be enough. When I was in Beaumont I had a problem with tight clay and a high water table. Might be the only way to grow them in your area. I resisted for several years, thought a raise bed was a waste time. Finally decided if that was what It took, it would be worth it. I also have grown peach trees in 20 gallon pots. A lot of work, but I did get peaches. Stay away from dwarf peach stock. They do not have enough vigor to stay ahead of disease.
