Okay--this is my kitchen, such as it is. Due to the cost of other renovation/preservation projects and upcoming college tuition bills, the kitchen gutting & cabinet replacement is going to have to wait 5-10 years.
In the meantime, What can I do? The wallpaper (not scrubbable--so the worst possible thing for a backsplash) needs to be stripped. The paint definitely needs freshening. With the 1980's almond laminate cabinets, what color would work for the walls? I gravitate toward yellow in kitchens (a fairly light, buttery shade) but I fear that would not provide enough contrast with the cabinets.
And a really out there question--is it possible to paint such cabinets white? If so, with what product?

I would think you could paint the cabinets. A good primer first and then and oil base paint. If you can, take one of the cabinets to a local paint store, not Walmart, etc. but a true paint store; and ask them for suggestions on what type of paint. Use a foam roller on them for a smooth finish (no brush stokes). From the picture of the floor, it appears that you have tan/grey coloring? How about a very pale greyish brown? You could then use the yellow for accessories? I think that would really make the cabinets pop if you go with white on them. Good luck!

I've seen these types of cabinets painted - and they do look good, particularly in darker colors such as Charcoal Grey.

If you can get expert advice, paint the cabinets buttery yellow and then do the back splash with a pop of color to enliven your space. Lettuce green or tangerine???

I would lightly sand the wood trim on the cabinets and paint them an off-white color. Cover the wallpaper backsplash with beadboard if that fits into your budget. You can buy it already painted white at home stores. Also, you could add black knobs to the cabinet doors to add some dimension. Good luck!

Hi I have the identical kitchen cupboards before I painted them. Please see picture, a lot of prep work. The paint does chip. But definitely an improvement. I actually got my brother to do all the work. I wished now I had painted them a darker colour. The white cupboards don't look great with almond appliances. But I wouldn't dare ask my brother to do them over. I think we even have the same stove, which I'm thinking of painting white ha maybe not, I think I should buy stainless steel.. Good luck. Worth the effort feels cleaner.
