Needing shade for my front door

I'm needing to shade/protect my front door that is on the north side of our home because it gets strong afternoon sun. I'm considering adding a pergola that would give some shade. Maybe bring it out to the sidewalk in front and bring the porch floor out with it, instead of the dirt you see.
