When does HVX show on the leaves?

Last year, I thought I had HVX on some hostas, but wasn't sure so I didn't pull them out. This year, there is no sign of a problem on the leaves. If I had it, would it show immediately on the new leaves?

If it was HVX, it would show now. Sometimes, plants just look really ugly in the fall, but it's lack of fertilizer, too much sun or not enough water or some other cultural problem. If the plant is fully leafed out and there is no sign, then it's unlikely it has HVX.

My one experience with HVX was on a Royal Standard, on which you cannot see vein bleed. At first, I thought it was cold damage, but it was more than that. So, you can see it in the spring.

ken has often said that you should not worry about HVX if it shows up in the late summer or early fall. Wait until spring and see if it's still there. I'm going by what he's said in the past and my own experience.

perhaps i said that if something LOOKS LIKE HVX .. but only shows later in the year.. you might have to consider that it isnt hvx ... but i dont even remember that ...

I see that you're in zone 3A. Could cold damage in the spring have caused the problem last year? I hope that what you saw in 2017 was just that. I've been hosta gardening for a few years and still worry when I see marks or damage on the leaves thinking it might be HVX.

I'm SO glad I didn't pull them out last year now! They are fully leafed out now and there is not a single blemish on them. I also hand picked slugs all summer last year and used a slug bait in the fall for the first time. Also no sign of slugs this year. Fantastic!!
