What a spectacular rose Gloire de Ducher is. I wouldn't want to have too many roses with such large blooms, but surely one can't hurt.

Julia Child is an extremely good rose which I heartlessly ripped out of my front garden because it didn't fit with my mostly white, pink and purple scheme or the wild hillsides surrounding it. Yours is perfection and I'm sure blends wonderfully into your garden surroundings.

I had this rose last year in a different position and it was smaller and gangly, in too much shade, so I'm delighted it has taken its move well, and is now sturdy, with strong canes, and happier in a much lighter sunnier spot. A bit more scent would be nice, I only get it on warm days...

oh thanks Ingrid, just saw you post... yes it must have looked out of place somewhat in your more pastel shade garden, but perhaps you might try again at some point.. maybe it would prove one of those roses that takes to your soil and climate that you are looking for...

Marlorena, your Gloire de Ducher is the stuff of deeply satisfying romances or a big tub of dark chocolate ice cream, an antique silver spoon and a good British mystery! If I thought GdD would hold off on the blackspot in my climate, I'd track one down and carry it home. Sometimes bigger is better, like when it's a velvety, raspberry-purple rose. Carol

I have a very small one (planted as a band last summer) in the shadier of my rose beds and even though it's small, it's putting out the most gorgeous blooms of all my red roses. They seem to glow from within. I'm looking forward to having 5 inch blooms!

Carol, I live near Seattle and my (admittedly new and small) GdD doesn't suffer from much, if any, blackspot!

Rosylady, thank you also, and I hope yours does well for you. Mine didn't like the shade too much so I moved it last year and now it's almost like seeing a different rose take shape but I expect you get more heat than I do... thanks again everyone..

Carol...I'm 99% sure I got mine from RVR. It was a very small, spindly band and has been one of the slowest growers of all my new roses. There have been times over the last year where I thought I would lose it! But this spring it finally put out a nice large cane and I can see it's getting going now.

Despite it's slow growth, it has continually had 1 or 2 beautiful blooms on it, even in the winter it was trying to bloom! I went out to take a picture to post here, but after our rain last night (did you also get rain in PDX?) it's looking a little bedraggled.

Anyway, this is one of my most anticipated roses in my new garden. Marlorena, I bought it after seeing your beautiful pictures last year. Thank you!

Yep, my garden was "heavily watered" last night, too. Fortunately I clipped a number of roses, like Clotilde Soupert, and deposited them in vases beforehand. Everything is a soggy mess now! Carol

I hope this message reaches you, now 5 years later? I just bought Gloire de Ducher from Rogue Valley Roses, OR. I love this rose, beautiful Fushia-wine-purple BIG BLOOMS, I hear she’s very fragrant, and vigorous growth! A friend pointed out you had GdD! I am so excited to see your photis of GdD! Huge blooms 5 1/2 diameter! Love it! Yours has exquisite colir! And i live your Julia Childs , too! I have Julua-she’s new… just 8 inches talk-but looks very healthy. My GDD is being dekivered next week-very excited!

How is your Gloire de Ducher now? Hiw tall? What is your city/sate location? I am wondering how she does us your climate & hiw she will do in my NY climate. I am sure she will be fine. How many times does she bloom/have flushes in your growing season?

For me, Gloire de Ducher is by no means a very vigorous rose-quite the contrary. Not that I plan to give up on it-those flowers are just TOO beautiful!

Bart, Not too vigorous isgoid! I don’t need too tall.Love her! “Too beautiful,” is real Good! Yes!!!

Well, Kitty,the problem isn't it getting too tall, the problem is getting it to grow, get established, get it's feet under it-not sure how to explain. My guess is that it takes a lot of energy to produce those flowers. I'm hoping that in the end my patience will be rewarded with a strong and sturdy plant...

I read that Gloire de Ducher is supposed to be hardy, vigorous. However, I am sure she needs the right conditions. for proper growth. And first year,roses usually are small-grow littleget their roots established. Second year roses start doing better-ok growth, but 3rd year roses take off-grow vigrously. Esp. bands from RVRs are small first year-take a few years to show their real stuff!

I purchased Cinderella as a band, who had 3 blooms first year, 1-2 ft high first year. Second year winter took its toll on her & she took all season to grow 2ft, but end of season she finally shot up 5 ft. Not much show of blooms in her second year. 3rd year, she started pruned in spring at 3ft, now 5 1/2 ft-sooooo many buds-unbelievable-can’t count-super vigorous-HUGE!!! My soil/fertilizers are organic.

How is your soil quality & does it drain well, fertilizer, and sunshine on Gloire de Ducher?

I use organic soils, Rose Tone, fish fertilizers & she will get full 8 hrs sun at least. What do you think?

There are many factors that can stunt growth. A climate she diesn’t like. Cold winters can damage their growth taking a full season to recover sometimes. if you have clay… it can defintely stunt growth &/or cause fungus from poor draining. Tree roots & other olants crowd & stunt growth. Sandy soil is poor for many roses. Where is your location-city-state? & plant zone?
