You don't have to put anything on it. You'll have a nice, clear surface waiting for you when you want to set down drinks or a tray of goodies for company. The most I ever put on coffee tables aside from that is sometimes a large coffee table book or two. Something colorful and interesting that your guests can thumb through.

It's true that you don't have to put anything on it, but maybe a stylish stack of coasters would be nice along with some large coffee table books with interesting and dynamic covers. Just makes the space feel a little more interesting and complete. I'm attaching pictures of some of our work with some other ideas. Hope that helps!
