Help! Monstera gritty repot problems

last modified: 8 years ago

After successful gritty mix repots, it was big Mama's turn. I've been waiting until this time of year and carried it out just as I had before. All of the original potting soil was removed and she was returned to her original pot with the gritty mix and a new bamboo stake for future climbing. She had become large but had plenty of room remaining in the pot. No roots were removed and all looked healthy. I was uber gentle with her foliage, as well. The stake was placed first, then secured with a layer of mix, then she was gentle snuggled around, and then everything was topped off. So nothing rough there either. She's been on a front covered porch and nothing has changed. Only I have held off on 9-3-6 since repotting. That was 3 days ago. A few cuttings in water that are going to a family members this weelend were kept in same spot and remain perfect.

please help!

ps. I've also broken my iPhone so I'm writing from an iPad. Additionally, I have to leave town for 24 hours tonight. I'll check in anytime I can and will even I lost in a family members help if needed while I'm gone. My plants are quite special to me and I don't want to lose her. Pics below. Will answer any Q and add more pics if needed. Thanks!

Did I post this in the wrong section?

Might get a better response in the houseplant section, though I see you have it outdoors.

I didn’t comment solely because this is one plant I’ve never grown in gritty mix, and I have mine indoors year-round. Mine is also in a comparatively small pot, in a soilless medium—in fact, quite dense in appearance with very little perlite compared to any of my other pots, even. The small amount of soil drains really rapidly but remains a level of damp that I like very much, and then dries fast because it’s so dry here. I deliberately used a soil called VermiPro for these attributes. So I water it relatively often (once a week these days?), and flush the soil heavily every 2-3 watering when I lug it outside.

Is your GM the exact replica of Al’s? Were all components wet before you mixed it up and planted? Did you sift/screen properly?

If I had to guess, I’d say it’s adjusting and that you can expect some additional leaf loss while it settles in. The photos don’t look TOO worrisome for a new repot (which is not common, in my experience, but not rare either), so I would just keep an eye on it.

Sorry I can’t be of more help!

Oh my! Your Monstera is gorgeous!

I'll have to pop over to houseplants, as this will actually be her first time spending the summertime outdoors. I chose to try both the gritty mix and outdoor placement after having such success with a few other plants. The only thing I can figure is that it's root trauma from removing all of the original soil. (Mostly done with a hose). I'm certainly interested in hearing how you care for yours. I'm hoping that she eventually recovers. However, I have roughly 10-15 starts in water that will need to be potted up in the very near future.

    Thanks!

I wonder if you are watering enough? If it previiously was in soil, then the repot to gritty would be a big shock, I would think. Gritty mix may require more frequent watering than a soil mix for such a plant.

Rebecca, it's been about a year since your comment here. I was wondering if you'd be able to provide any updates on your Monstera in the 5:1:1 mix? I recently purchased a variegated cutting and potted it in the 5:1:1 after water rooting it (probably based on the very comment from Al you're referencing), but after about two or three months there was no discernible growth and I decided to move it to gritty mix. During the re-potting, I noticed almost no new root development since the original potting after water-rooting.
