Is this a silver maple?

I'm not sure lol. I grew it from seed a couple of years ago

That is a comically long branch!

You can cut about two thirds of those bent branches off, that will slow them down and will probably be removed completely in a couple of years. Look up 'structural pruning' and 'branch collar' for information on correct pruning practices.

But I agree with Embothrium, not a desirable tree for urban locations. Will get huge in as little as 25-30 years with all the problems of a soft wooded tree and by then will cost plenty to remove. Not to mention bumper crops of seeds that have a weed like nature with them sprouting up everywhere each spring.

hope you arent fertilizing it ... causing the excessive growth ... this thing simply doesnt need such ...

i would start snipping back from the tip ... in one foot increments.. until the branch shoots skyward ...

i am presuming you are going to.. in the future ... raise the canopy ... at least until you run out of ladder ... if so .. these branches will eventually be removed .. i would do it.. before the branch got more than an inch diameter.. in a year or two ...

in the mean time.. if you leave half the leaves .. or whatever it works out to .... those leaves will continue to process sunshine into tree food ...

btw.. i would remove the grass in a 2 or 3 foot circle ... to keep the nut with the weedwhip away from it ...

Silver maples do have their place if they have the space to grow.

I see boxelder and cottonwood mangled from structure failures much more so than silver maple. It's amazing how many nice specimens still exist without damage on all the 50s and 60s built homes around here.
