When I worked at Duke Garden center, my job was to repot all the brom pups. I'd take the old, half dead mother plants home with me and just toss them out under my oak tree. Every single one would put out another pup before it died completely. I had a very nice assortment of broms from doing that.

My friend in Bradenton volunteers in the greenhouses at Selby gardens, and she takes home the tossaway plants. They aren't allowed to take them until they are in the dumpster, but she's got the most amazing yard you've ever seen, all grown from pieces and parts of half-dead plants.

But---that alternanthera (purple plant) -- unless you want a yard full of those, get rid of it now! I took a cutting from a friend's in North Port, and it almost took over my yard. I thought "Little Ruby," the trailing kind, would be friendlier, but no such luck. From three little cuttings I got three years ago, I've given away and tossed away hundreds of those things! Last year, they started choking out everything in the south facing garden, so I was happy thinking the freeze would kill it all. NOPE! It all came back, or came up from seed, and I've spent hours pulling it out, to no avail. Seeds are everywhere, and it just keeps coming back up. I'm going to work on clearing a space tomorrow that I evidently missed before. If you leave even one tiny piece, it comes right back.

The broms are great because they will pup! Love the one in the center, especially.
