Furniture ideas for large open great room

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi,

My husband and I recently purchased a home and are debating on the furnitire and layout. This would be a family room/great room used for lounging and watching tv but also for entertainment when we have guests over. Ideally I'd like an L shaped sectional, he thinks a sofa and loveseat would be better. Also, not sure if we should have it set up the way the previous owners did or if we should break up the space. You may not be abe to tell from the photo (from previous owner), but the entrainment center is on the far left, which is probably where we'd place our TV.

We will be starting from scratch furniture wise with this room so open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Can you post a floor plan? Generally speaking a sofa and chairs work better than a sectional or a sofa & loveseat. How often will that door be used? I'd rather 1 large rug but without seeing the other walls it's hard to comment

It looks like all you need to do is actually flip the sofa to face the wall and then you can place a TV there on a console if you want. The sofa would float in the middle of the room on a rug and you could possibly put a sofa table behind it if there was enough room. We think getting a sofa and two chairs would be the best option as well, or a sectional. Here are some pictures that might help:

One 3-seat sofa and 2 chairs. You could use a reversible chaise sofa that allows you to flip the chaise from right to left when you want to rearrange.

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately I don't have the dimensions but asked my realtor to reach out to the seller. We close next month. But that door is the only door to the backyard so it will be used frequently. Will it look odd putting the tv on that wall with the rectangular window? We have a 60" so it's pretty big. Was worried if we put a couch there it would be too close to the TV or that it may block the door but the room is certainly big enough so perhaps if we place the couch in the center it won't be an issue with the door. If I do that, any suggestions on how to best fill up the space on the sides since it's a long room? Thanks for the suggestions!

If you want TV in their location, I would put a chaise sofa as they have their large sofa under the slit window, with the chaise portion next to the picture window. Then add a pair of swivel chairs out in front of the TV so they can turn to conversation or to watch. You'll have space for a table with lamps at the window, and a floor lamp left of the sofa.

Received this from the appraisal report if that helps with the dimensions. Bottom is where the TV is. Do you think it makes sense to break up the space and not have the sofa against the back wall (top)? The nook is where the kitchen table is.

This is what my husband drew up in CAD based on the actual dimensions of the room and one of the

couches we were looking at. Thoughts? Again, we really want to use this space for entertainment and lounging/watching TV. Is the couch too big? Thanks in advance!
