Irma, thanks for the link. I assumed since the queen and the monarch were on the same plant in the garden they were ok to be on the same plant in the enclosure. I researched further and found that monarchs are also cannibals but normally only when they don't have enough to eat. Guess the queen will be moved out.

I have 2 monarchs ready to form their chrysalis...formed the "J". One is up on the ceiling in the very corner of the enclosure and since I'm not a contortionist anymore, I can't get a pic (the plastic viewing pane is crappy for pics). This one is under a leaf. In a few days after the chrysalis is formed and hardened, I'll relocate it to the top as I'm afraid the leaf will get eaten by the other cats and this will fall.

Thanks Javi! This is my first time at raising butterflies in enclosures, so I'm pretty excited :)

Rhonda, aren't you worried about the plastic making the enclosure too hot?

I raise them in my lanai but do not enclose them. They stay on the Milkweed until they are ready to go and I move them to a large Money Tree on my lanai.

My neighbor raises them in a screen enclosure. It has a zipper which opens the front and back making it easy for cleaning and the Catts hang from the mesh when they are ready. When they go away for a week or so, she moves the whole thing to my patio.

I would be concerned about using plastic in this heat.

Jane, the enclosures are only plastic on one side. Top and other sides are mesh. They're in total shade (next to the house) and the way the lanai is situated on the side of the house there's always a breeze blowing through it. I was concerned originally but the plastic isn't the least bit warm and the enclosure is actually staying cooler...much cooler...than the outside temp where my milkweed is which is in full sun from 9 am til sunset.

Really good that you accommodated your setup for breezes to blow through. I've had issues in the past with my MW perhaps not getting enough air circulation (I was told planting next to my wooden fence was an issue, but I didn't have many other options at the time) -- my MW starts to get spotty (rust & whatever else) if it's been very damp w/ zero breeze blowing...which is too many days on end around here. :)

As of this afternoon I have 4 chrysalis with 5 cats very close to pupating. I'm so excited!

I couldn't resist, Rhonda, and brought in 3 tiny cats and one egg. I realized that a number of cats had gone missing since I saw them on the MWs last week, so I'm guessing either the lizards or wasps got to them. The swallowtails are doing fine on their own outside, so I'm in 'monarch rescue' mode again. :)

That's great Javi!!! This is my first year raising them but I'm hooked now :)
