Help with constructing a vanity mirror frame

How would you construct the backing of this mirror so that the mirrors float on the frame? The vanity will be stained clear alder, and since alder is a lighter-weight wood than paint-grade maple, is it an option for painting? How would we add the raised edging? It mimics the door style of our vanity.
