You could try some outdoor ant bait. I've not used it, but I've heard it works. I think you can get this at HD. Having lizards in your yard might help, if you do not use the bait. I have lizards and spiders but no ants.

I recommend capturing a few, put the ants in a plastic bag. Take the ants to your local garden supply store, obtain identification and a lawn friendly insecticide. I use diazinon on my lawn for Argentine ants, but do not if it is available in your area or if you have the same ants as I do.

Try an ant trap with boric acid bait.

What exactly is it about them that is bothering you?

You could just ignore them. They might even go away. Did they come in with the sod or are they your own ants?

They definitely came in with the sod, as we also wound up with a bunch in our vehicle after transporting :( I guess I'm concerned that they'll wind up in our house (we're 6 years ant free, knock on wood!!!), and I'm also concerned they'll damage the new sod, although I really don't know if they could do that. Plus the sod is for the dog, and I don't know if they're biting ants (or if they would even bother her???) Lars, we do have the occasional lizard, but the hound in question has been nicknamed "The Great Lizard Hunter"... I have stepped on way more of my fair share of still-wiggling lizard tails!!!!!

Ants won’t really do you any harm. Poison also kills beneficial bugs. My lawn has tons of ants. They don’t come in the house and they don’t bite us or the dog.

Integrated Pest Management is supposed to be a 5 step method of controlling insect pests and should not begin with the most powerful poisons available, although Diazinon was removed from the list of available household poisons in 2004 and should not be available for homeowners to use today.

1. Identify the problem.

2. Determine if control measures are necessary.

3. Identify the least toxic method of control needed.

4. Apply that control.

5. Review if the control method has worked.

The presence of ants, outside, probably does not mean any method of control is needed.

Are they Fire Ants? You certainly don't want an infestation of those. I think that you should call the place from which you bought your sod and complain loudly. Bringing home a population of ants of any kind is not acceptable.

The health of the sod is secondary to that of your dog! You can't use diazinon on any area used by people or pets! Ever! It is banned in many areas and hopefully not available on the market for homeowners. Do your own research on Talstar and decide if it's a good option for you or not.

Knowing what kind of ants you're dealing with is important. Make that a priority so that you can fine tune the control.

They'll probably just die off on their own because they're all worker ants. The colony they came from is too big to be in the sod. I wouldn't worry about them.

Ants usually try to come into the house in the fall or earlier, if it's been very dry. It's easiest just to bait them when you see them.

Ants do not bother plants so very little concern about them being outside in the sod. And there is nothing "friendly" - on lawns or anything else - about Diazinon. It was removed from the residential marketplace due to extreme toxicity and is illegal for home usage.

Honestly unless you are growing commercial crops I don’t see why anyone has to use poisons of any kind in their home garden. People are very quick to grab for the spray bottle or pump at the first sight of bugs or plant damage. In 90%+ of situations you’re fine just letting things be and our planet will thank you. There are lots of us enjoying beautiful yards and gardens without insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. It is possible!

They will go away. After 15 years on lawn forums, ant issues are extremely rare. I have to conclude that it is not normal for a lawn to be infested with ants. If yours is any kind of normal, they just go away with weekly watering, mowing, and fertilizing. If they do not go away in a week, then I would put down any organic fertilizer to improve the health of the soil and general environment. After that your lawn should be more normal and the ants should go away.

My Bermuda sod came with an infestation of rover ants. Not cool, but my exterminator took care of them with 3 visits a month apart

Well they may have been worker ants after all by I haven’t seen much activity. I definitely wouldn’t use any really nasty chemicals as we also have kiddos in addition to the great lizard hunter!
