If you must have blinds I would use top down cellulars which are kept completely up during the day. They can then be softened with sheer grommet top panels ( use enough panels so that they are full when closed). Pull your sofa out slightly so that it does not impede the curtains. I think that blinds/shades alone will take away from the charm of your lovely home.

I think roman blinds suit your aesthetic. You described your home as "charming" and "rustic" and I think fabric curtains are the way to go with that style. Roman blinds combine the pretty warmth of fabric with the casual charm of a rustic home. You'll still get good light control and privacy and you can add a pattern and maybe colour to all the brown solids in the room

Word of caution on top-down/bottom up shades: Take a look at the cables you're left with, on the windows, in certain positions. Do you like it? It can be a bit jarring, for some.

Diane's photos are lovely --- but they are large, tall, open windows. The OP has lower ceilings and a sofa in front of the windows. My fear would be that Roman shades would weight down what is already chopped in half. I would want to keep as much openness as possible, so I favor the bottom up shades. Alone for a minimal look or with curtains hung on the outside if you want a fuller treatment or to bring in a pattern, texture or color.

It looks like the OP has baseboard heat. Might that affect her window treatment options?

I think everyone has weighed in on this dilemma but the OP. Let's back off and give the ideas time to soak in.

First time poster here, wasn’t expecting so much input! Thank you to everyone for your ideas. I really like the top down bottom up roman shades and I think what I would do then is put tied back curtains on each end to give us the ability to get the room even darker when desired and dress it up a little bit.

For those asking, yes we have baseboard heat along that wall but it is boiler heat not electric and the registers never really get all that hot so I don’t think it will effect too much as long as it’s not a super flammable material and they are the correct length.

Roman shades on windows that wide will look like blankets. I'd go for nicer vertical blinds, a color closer to the window frame color or really nice custom drapes on a traverse rod w/ accompanying valance or header and possibly sheers behind (like what a nice hotel would have). Another option might be some sort of shutter. It seems to be whatever you go with will end up being quite expensive to do "right".

This may be the blankets Utah was referencing. Still not a bad contemporary look.

I was recommending using a series of three Roman shades. Each shade would be just over 3' wide. I'm certain that Roman shades are installed on 3'+ windows frequently enough without looking like blankets.

I think roller shades might be your best option since they are easy to manage, and to clean. Even natural shades. They have more of an earthy balance in browns, tans. etc. which is the color palate that you have going on! One thing I would recommend is going cordless, though. It's a lot safer for pets and younger kids.

Roman shades on large windows will look like blankets because they are constructed of fabric. The green window treatment pictured above looks to be cellular shades, not roman shades. When the roman shade is drawn closed it will have little structure and essentially look like a large piece of fabric, like a blanket. When you look online for images of roman shades they are mostly shown on cute little windows. You don't often see them in massive windows and when you do they aren't typically photographed drawn closed, because yep, it looks like a blanket.

We had roman shades on our floor to ceiling windows and it made the room look smaller, so I made a 20ft curtain rod and did floor to ceiling curtains instead. I would advise to do that as you can tell it definitely shortens the window significantly unless you go with something sheer.

I have a similar window. Luckily the previous owner has left the 96" Ikea curtains and rod. Curtains are a wee bit short for me (and they shrank when I washed them!), and rod is not as high as I'd like, but it works for now. The Ikea drapes are thick neutral and affordable. I am also looking for other options in the future, but not quite settled yet to decide on.

You can do many things on this window. You can do sheers and some curtains or stationary panels. You could do a plain cellular or roller shade with a top treatment to tie the room together. You could also go with a roman weather it be fabric or natural woven material.
