Consider hiring a local architect. They will be able to determine the existing conditions that will influence the design of the porch and garage and your existing home. There are a lot of things to consider (like zoning restrictions) when adding onto an existing home.

Are you on acreage? Or at least a large lot? I ask because you have the opportunity to potentially have a detached garage not forward facing and not forward of your current home. Depends on the lot and other restrictions you may have as Mark mentioned.

If having the garage close is important to you, there are many other ways to have it without protruding forward. There are other ways to connect it without attaching it (think breezeway here).

I'm on 1 acre. The house sits pretty much in the middle of the lot. I have a door on the side of the house that i guess was meant to open into a garage but the garage was never built. So its just a useless door. I either attach a garage or figure out some other way to use it such as the breezeway Denita suggested. I most likely have enough land to the side to place a garage either way. I will check the zoning restrictions. If the garage is detached, the porch can be done much easier I suppose.

I don't think it is either easier or harder for a porch to be added to the front with or without the garage attachment. It becomes a matter of your budget and easements and setback requirements in your municipality and the creativity of your architect.

The reason you want an architect is to get the best possible result so the additions don't look like additions. They look like they were planned right from the beginning. You have more opportunities than most because of your large lot.
