Right!! It was just not well thought out, at all! i can totally picture a fireplace on the left to balance it.

Structurally, we think it is very basic. No lighting and only one outlet. we dont think it is load bearing... the dividers seem hollow

That is weird. It would be a shame to lose all that extra space. I’d investigate whether you could open it up a little more so it’s symmetrical or close it up a bit so that it is symmetrical.

IMO that would be astrange space for a fireplace or a TV could you post some pics of the whole space . I think the bookcases will need to go too.

Yes! Very weird...very akward! With the right photography trickery the space doesn't seem so bad. I honestly cannot get used to it!

This is our living room... we are a family of 4 and frequently have friends and family over. The bookcases definitely need to go... here is a picture of the house from when it was staged so you can get a sense of the layout.

I would love to convert the whole thing to a built in unit (similar to this... perhaps not white and more open like a bookcase... but, you get the jist...) but have no idea if it would be feasible or what it would cost.

What room is this? A bonus room/bedroom? What are the two dark wood cabinets flanking the desk nook?

What is behind the solid wall to the right of your desk nook? behind the wall with the blue art (really nice art; liking the blue colors) -- Can you remove all of that wall and all the dividing walls to enlarge the room and start over with a rectangular shaped room so you can create the built ins you like in the end?

What is behind the wall with the TV niche? And what are the actual dimensions of the room?

My daughter's bedroom is behind the built in... the wall behind the blue painting is exterior facing.

Living/Great Room... floor dimensions are appx 15' x 13' w/12' ceilings

Wall it over and give your daughter a new large, likely much needed closet. Then create your built ins on the new solid straight wall.

An alternative to walling off the entire indent would be to remove the vertical walls and dark vertical cabinets -- opening up as much of the space as possible -- then building a new back wall that creates two indents -- one in this room and one in your daughter's room. She, too, could have built in shelving storage, open or with bifold doors and very likely welcomed as much as a deep closet would be.

As you create your built ins, you might consider adding a small decorative window where the art now hangs.
