Where I am, SVBs are a "spring thing". I plant in May, plant out in June, and cover the plants until ... yesterday. My plants should be more or less safe here on out. You might research what their schedule is in your locale. The pupa are in the soil. The pupa will wait there until next year.

If you have hard freezes, turning the soil in the fall before winter will expose the pupa to the cold, and they will die. In fact, just turning the soil disrupts them. I don't think there are any chemicals residential gardeners can use that will kill them. Those were the days when residential gardeners could use soil fumigants!

I have squash bugs this year, but the SVB population is maybe one-fourth what it was last year for some reason.

Research to find out if there is more than one life-cycle of the SVB in your area. You can replant even if there is BUT if you replant in the same area AND use a row cover the SVB will simply hatch under the row cover.

So if you have another area you can plant there and use a row cover. Or you can dig or sift the area where these plants were to find the larvae in that soil and plant there.

Keep in mind there is still a risk of SVB flying in from another area.

There are many discussions on this forum which may give you other ideas or pics of the larva.

Thank you everyone for the advice! It looks like Virginia may get two generations of SVB, but most google sources are vague. I will till up the area and replant, and hope for the best! I'll probably still cover them because I'll be out of town for a couple weeks, and if SVB doesn't get them, squash bugs will.

You have nothing to loose by trying only something more to learn. Keep in mind you will need to either hand pollinate or uncover after blossoms set.

Hopefully you have removed any dead plants from the area and sent them to the landfill?

The best source of info about gardening facts in your area is going to be your local extension service. Google doesn't know much about SVBs, as it turns out. In Virginia, that would be at https://ext.vt.edu/. They welcome questions from VA residents.

@gumby, yes plants have been thrown out. I’ll uncover when they start flowering. And I agree about everything being a learning experience :)

@dan, the VA extension publications just said “some areas may have 2 generations.” I’ll contact them directly to ask.
