I'm a home builder and we also build decks... Unless they already have a design usually, I would provide them with a design and 3D visuals so they can see entire design as it would look complete. 95% of the time we would do online session if they like to change something in the design and see how that will look and make final adjustments.

So depends who you talking too and who does your design,i.e an architect, landscaper or deck contractor, make sure you can have a 3D visual so you can see the final outcome. The good thing about online session is that you can actually do a walkthrough of your backyard and the entire design and get the feel of the space from all angles as you actually there in reality.
