They are dated and I've yet to see one that looks good because they tend to look they have no real reason for being.

Sophie my ceiling is 10' in my master and it feels fine. Of course I have "pulled the ceiling down" by having the hatband at the 8' mark so that may compensate too.

Depends on the style of your house too, more traditional often = coffered. It's a detail, you decide if you like it or not. Our master and dinning room are both 12' coffered, adds a detail of distinction from the other rooms. In a warm climate like ours, tall ceilings reign!

hummingalong2- We like a more transitional style

Our tastes skew traditional, so we're doing a furr down + coffer. Ceiling height would come down from 10' to 9'4 or 9'6 on the perimeter, like yours. We do have a canopy style bed seemed to bring the ceiling down in our previous home with 8' ceilings and a 9' trey. So hoping this would be just right.

In that case a 10' flat ceiling would probably be a better choice for you.

I would skip the tray ceiling. It would give a less fussy look. We went with 11' ceiling and it feels "right" to us and gives ample room for a ceiling fan.

I think this is a style preference. Some tray ceilings are absolutely beautiful but are expensive because there's so much detail. If it's done more economically, then it's best not to bother. To take a way the stark look if you have a plain ceiling, I suggest a simple but large-scale crown moulding to define the transition.
