Single guy needing deco tips!

Single guy in Naples, FL here...new condo. Need some design advice. I just purchased this condo and I’ve recently had an electrician come through and update the place with some recessed lighting. I will soon be having the popcorn ceiling removed and thinking of painting the walls a neutral grayish/beige color. Right now I’m leaning toward Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. I have attached a picture with a photoshopped piece of art which I have ordered. I’m not sure where to go from here. Accent chair, area rug, coffee table, dining table, colors, etc... I’m not looking to make any structural changes at this time, but just decorating tips. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, it will be nice to see the popcorn ceiling go! Regarding the rug...I know many have said to buy rug first and art last, but do you think if I purchased the blue rug with the curvy designs as shown above...would it severely limit my art choices and would it “compete” too much with the wall art due to its bold designs? I love that rug, but I don’t want to be in a position later on to run into those issues
  • 6 years ago

Yes, that curvy blue rug is limiting your art choices. Art is forever; rugs are not. Therefore, I like to let the art dictate the rug choice rather than the other way around.

Some will tell you that art doesn't have to match the rest of your furnishings. I'm in the camp that says the furnishings should match (or at least not clash) with your art.

We have almost the same floor plan in our condo at Rockport, TX. My wife did the remodeling. I have pix but not on this computer. I'll get back to you with her designs. Of course we are remodeling now after Hurricane Harvey, so we'll see how it comes out this next time.

It's too late now but Home Depot has some surface mount LED fixtures that look a lot like can lights. The cost is $35 for a pair of lights when they are in stock. We used them in our hallways.

@dchall...that’s exactly what I used in my hallway as well since I couldn’t do recessed due to the placement of a ceiling joist. I would love to see your layout if you are able to post pics!

I had to offload pictures from my Dropbox, so I stored them on my computer with the big drive. Here are some pix of the living room

We kept some of the furniture from the seller to use in the rental. We have to be able to sleep 8 people or the rental agency won't deal with us, so we have a lot of chairs.

    Kitchen pictures.

After Hurricane Harvey the condo survived perfectly. Unfortunately the unit above us had no doors or windows, so our unit was totaled by the water dripping down through his flooring. We had plenty of time to remove all our new furniture and stuff including the toilets, light fixtures, and kitchen sink. For future reference, boarding up the windows and doors works perfectly.

I like fluffy rugs, it gives warmth to the place. As for art, with what you have, lots of colour would go perfectly. Personally I don't like plants, maybe just some lucky bamboo.

    Warmer colors with shag rug...

I have gotten many great ideas here. My place should be painted by middle of next week. So I’ll take some new pics and post after that happens. Here’s the place as of yesterday. Ugh..I have a lot of dusting to do...

We scraped our popcorn ceiling in our house before we moved in. It was fairly simple to do unless the ceiling had been painted. We sprayed the ceiling with a garden sprayer and let the water soak in. Then peeled it right off with a 4-inch wide scraper blade. There was no dust at all. But it was a different story where the ceiling had been painted. No amount of water would penetrate the paint. That was pure brute force and dust.

Yea, the dust wasn’t bad till they applied the plaster stuff and sanded it down. They refinished all the tape joints and everything. NO WAY I woulda tackled this myself. Every little closet and room had that ceiling replaced.

Just wanted to let everyone know my place is being painted this week and then I will take some new pictures for a better feel of what direction to head. Thanks for all the help and standby! Thanks again!

    WELCOME TO NAPLES....beautiful Naples!!
No need to go Coastal crazy....with shells, etc. that look is old , along with flamingo pink and bright green.
A clean contemporary look would suit you and
be comfortable . You are on the ground floor and need privacy. While no one is a fan of the
shades, they are easy to work with.
One suggestion.....a bistro height dining set so that when you do have guests, they can pull the chairs to the bar and converse with you.
    Good luck.
Hey R M, thanks. It is beautiful here. I am actually on the top floor (2nd floor) corner unit. I will replace the window shades eventually, but for now...I spent just about everything I had to move here and since moving in I’ve had electric redone=$5000, popcorn ceiling removed & painting= $5000, and in a couple weeks will be putting in a new A/C unit= $4000. I need to find an area rug, coffee table, and piece of art first. Mainly because an area rug will kill some of the echo in my condo. Right now it echoes pretty bad throughout since it’s all hard floors and I only have a new leather sofa, old coffee table, and a TV w/glass stand in my living/dining area. Lol ...whew, baby steps

Thoughts? Blue vs. Green vs. Neither...

Both look good to me. I'm slightly more in the green camp though. Personal preference!

Post an image with new wall color. IMO the rugs and art do not compliment each other. Do you have a theme; coastal/nautical, urban modern, industrial, mid century modern etc? What furniture is staying? What colors are you drawn too? Do you have an inspiration image for the finished room?

I can't pinpoint what it is, but I find groveraxle's rendition above (2nd picture with the green pillow) very appealing. Just my opinion.

@Pajarito...I can’t really find any inspiration photos, but I will keep looking. The only furniture I have at this point is my white sofa with dark wood legs, satin nickel lamp, a satin nickel ceiling fan with dark wood blades, and a black glass TV stand. I might replace the TV stand eventually, but definitely not anytime time soon. All that stuff is there to stay.

@Anna...I agree. I really like the second one with the yellow sofa pillow too. It flows well. The only problem is that particular piece of art only comes in a 48”x43” size and my sofa is 91” long so I’m not sure it would look right above it. It’s hard to get the art scaled to size correctly in the pics.

This artist offers many sizes and you could even contact her for a custom order. If you are inspired by her work. The price point is good too.

Can you tape the size of the art piece on the wall above the couch? Once all of the work has been completed? Waiting until the paint has cured properly would be needed I suspect.

@Anna...I sure will. I will probably have to wait till next week to do it. I will update with new pictures including new paint color and all. Right now, I’m still waiting for them to finish painting and cleaning up.

HU-994etc., are you really loving these art pieces you're sticking over your sofa? I know everyone has different tastes, but from an objective standpoint, many are poorly composed and have little depth. Don't forget, you don't have to do a single large piece, but could do a diptych or triptych like those from Kat Shoa. (And please, I beg you, do not find a single piece and have it cut into thirds.)

Love that mock-up Grover! Only problem is I’m an OSU alumni and I just can’t bring myself to decorate my whole living room in blue and yellow. LOL

Some artists I like include Craig Tracy (I love tasteful nude art) and Craig has some amazing body-painting photography pieces. Also, I like some of LDawningScott’s stuff. I’m always open to suggestions too! This is all new to me

Good morning. My first place in Naples had a very similar setup....just a bit larger.
Mine was carpeted in white carpet. White sofa and love seat(22yrs. ago).
I had a beautiful lake view and tried to make it
the focal point. I added color in accessories and art. NO Beach stuff!
Unless you are really loving the patterned rugs ,
consider a solid neutral rug. I personally would tire of all the movement on the floor.
So many furniture stores in Naples in addition to high end resale stores.
PS. I have a 4x6 framed original nude in my master bath....black and white. I add that only because waaaaay back you said you liked nudes.

For now, pull your accent chair out of the corner, but when finances permit, replace it with an arm chair that will encourage someone to stay and join you for a beer. You can keep the vertical blinds for now, but the sticks really do have to go. (Unless you need them for self defense.)
