Many people like the same flooring throughout the house to provide a sense of "flow," especially when several rooms can be seen from one area, as in an "open floor plan" home.

If each room in the home has its own door and is reached by a hallway, different flooring and decoration might be used in the individual rooms. For example, a children's playroom, a sitting room, a library/computer room, a laundry room, various bedrooms, and so on.
The flooring might actually be the same material throughout the home, but with the addition of room-size rugs or area rugs for different decorative effects.

I have lived in homes with a single floor covering in all rooms, in a home in which the kitchen and bathroom had waterproof flooring and all the other rooms had different colors of carpeting, and a home in which large rooms were defined by different colors/patterns of carpets. I liked them all for different reasons.

I agree with Eztia, that the flow is nice with the same flooring, but different types of rooms may work better with different types. The entry area of my house is ceramic tile, the rest of the public open concept areas are hardwood flooring, and the bedrooms are all the same Berber carpet. The basement is a slightly different shade of the same Berber carpet, to warm the space & soften it underfoot.
