Please help me pick an entry way tile!

Hi Houzz friends! My husband and I are getting ready to move into a new home and the tile entry way needs rejuvenation! The home was built in 1984 and the floor, as you can see, is original. I'm set on tile and was thinking something larger format. The space is about 150 sq feet. I'll include a few photos of the rest of the house, in case that helps, along with some photos of plans I have for new carpeting on the stairs (that spill out into the entry). Cannot wait to see what you all might come up with! Thank you :)

I'm planning to do the stairs in a pattern like this (the other, more solid sample is the carpet that will be laid in the family room/dining room)

I was thinking larger format just because it's popular right now.

Unless you're selling in the next couple of years, that is the reason I would NOT do large format. I would do something a bit more classic. Love the brick look or a slate look.

My first thought was a brick, but you mentioned large format. What is your style?

You could also do a light colored tile with some movement in a Chevron style, to tie in your carpet. Not the fake wood, those never look right, but something with lots of grain to it.

Thanks ElleN! :) Love your take! Particularly the chevron pattern (though I wonder how much that could drive up install costs). I was thinking larger format just because it's popular right now. I'd say my style incorporates warm rustic vibes mixed with modern touches.

I live in the Midwest and, at least in my area, brick as an entry way is not something I've seen often here. An interesting consideration...

Based on your preferences, I'm going to double down on my two suggestions.
I don't think large tile will work on your small area, and I definitely don't think you should do it because it's popular. A tile should match the size of the space. Anything that small with that many corners will also have lots of weird cuts in the tile, and you might end up having to have something like a 2" strip of tile at one side of the room. Large tile is also more expensive to install and more prone to "lippage" because it's harder to make it straight.
The cost of Chevron/herringbone is higher. But it will also help hide the weirdness of cutting tiles around all the stairs etc. You would also need a fairly experienced tile guy for this job, not the lowest bid.
Only you can decide if it's worth it to you to do Chevron.
Note that brick is a bit more difficult to clean, but they make sealers you can put on them, kind of like for basketball court floors.
I just think your space is reasonably small and you have the opportunity to make the floor a great statement, so you should :)

Hi friends, just an update here of what we ended up choosing for our entry tile. While we had some great suggestions (I especially loved the idea of a stone or brick) we went more mainstream with something that we liked and that didn’t break the budget. Thanks again for all the opinions! Happy holidays!
