It's not a silly question, you just need to think past looks. The outside of the drain is a slot: the rest of the plumbing is still round pipes. It is more complicated to build in a stopper, but they are available. I've seen sinks built both ways, with and without a stopper, so it is very important to know what you are getting.

I do wash hand washables, and soak soiled garments, and bathe babies, and entertain toddlers, and give sponge baths, and bleach tub toys, and give my primary kids the task of washing their doll clothes, anf disinfect lice combs, and a dozen other little tasks in my bathroom sink :-D

Used to shave in the shower but did not like storing (or hauling in and out) the shave cream, shaver and mirror in the shower area. Much easier in the sink.

Shaving cream and shaver stays in the shower. Mirror is overrated. My face looks the same every day, so I don't need a mirror. I just memorized where I put my nose, my ears, and my mouth :-)

Seriously though, I do realize that this is a personal choice. For myself, I can't think of any better option. I hate when I occasionally need to shave at a sink when travelling. It's always so messy. But I do realize it takes a little getting used to, when you first learn how to shave in the shower.

Also, it helps that we designed our shower niche to have dedicated storage for my razor and for the shaving cream. I could see how things would be annoying, if you can't figure out a solution for that. But if that's your main issue, you'd think that there should be a way to fix this problem. There are lots of shower caddy systems; some better than others.

Even if you could stopper the sink that is shown, you wouldn't have much depth to do anything in that sink (see lindsey's extensive list of activities above). You'd want a more practical and traditional sink to do those things.

I think the shown sink is just meant for guest bathrooms and are just for washing hands in. Form over function. IMO

@M - As you said personal choice. We just finished our home and the master shower has a niche that is 40 inches long so storage is not the issue. Back to the Anne's question, yes some fill the sink and use a stopper.

I'm sure that I could make something with my 3D printer, if I spent enough time. My first thought would be to print a mold for some castable silicone. Might take a couple of iterations to get it right though.

Slot sinks have a linear drain catch that can simply be attached to the bottom of the sink with silicon sealant making it possible to maintain, and you could have a compression fitting on the drain pipe that unscrews by hand if it gets really clogged...

I rinse my contact lenses in the sink twice a day, so it's essential that I be able to stop the drain to prevent accidentally dropping it and washing it down the drain. I could really use a stopper for this kind of sink.
