I make the entire binding and lay it around the quilt. I can see all the seams and move the binding if needed. Once I like the position I pin the beginning and start sewing.

With experience, I figured out to do what Susan does. I do try to lay it around, but sometimes the seam hits on a corner. Just shorten the binding at the seam closest to, but before, the corner.

I wait to attach the ends until I have sewn down the binding on the back. That way I have extra if I need to shorten it.

Sometimes I lay the binding out like glassquilt explained, and sometimes I just roll the dice. I had that happen tonight, but the corner turned out just fine anyway. If it hadn't, I would have cut the binding as Susan suggested.

I usually lay the binding out, too. I've been using that continuous binding method, and still can't remember to determine how much I need before I start making it. Just to be safe, I lay the binding out around the quilt. One of these days I'll remember to measure the quilt top before I cut binding!

Thanks, guys. I'd never had that happen before, so I was unaware of how difficult it would be to get it to fold and lay flat. I had already sewed the front by machine and was half finished with hand sewing to the back when I found it. I'll check it next time. This time, it just has an imperfect corner. For me, that was past the point of going back.
