Amazed at Corn Spacing

We were on a trip to my grandparents last weekend, and I was quite amazed to see that their sweet corn was spaced so closely together!! Most of the time the minimum I see is 6" apart, but theirs were more like 3" apart in rows 36" apart. They credit this to not thinning when they should have. I was quite amazed to see the yield they're producing. I'm seeing 2 medium sized ears per plant.

How close have you been able to get sweet corn before? This is making me rethink planting sweet corn in my garden in following years. I'd always thought it takes up 2-3 square feet per plant!

Of course, their soil has been worked for nearly 20 years. Good stuff.
