How to get high variation hardwood flooring?

I'm looking to get high variation solid hardwood or engineered wood (particularly in a lighter oak color) with a matte or low gloss finish. How would I go about finding it?

I'm in CA Bay Area and most of the stores have prefinished solid hardwood but I can't find anything with a lot of variation in color.

Are there any other brands (or direct sources) I should look at?

You can START with a wood that has HIGH variation. Hickory being the most common option in North America. It has 7-10 different "wood tones" present in a single floor. There are many dozens of hickory engineered floors with a finish on them that would suit your tastes.

Good luck. Google hickory hardwood. You will be happily surprised.

If you want a high variation in solid hardwood, you can simply buy multiple species or multiple finishes of wood at some place like Lumber Liquidators. The result would be a highly customized floor since you would be selecting the individual components.

It depends on what you mean by color. As mentioned use different types of woods, or go with a wood that has a lot of variation like Acacia wood with a natural finish. Thats what I used and I love it.

Search for fumed hardwood floors. Anything is possible, with the unique applications being done mostly with site finished floors that require unfinished engineered with that wide of a plank.

Prefinished? They're out there but very high retail prices for the most part.
