Getting discouraged.

I am trying to start a new quilt which has a lot of Flying Geese. I am doing the no-waste method. When trimming them to the correct size, 31/2x 61/2, the points at the bottom of the block should come to a nice point on both sides. I can get one side to come out correctly, but the second side isn't always correct. Any suggestions??? I have been using scrap fabric to test out different measurements. Not having any luck. Don't want to use my planned fabric because I am a bit short.

I recall doing these before and having some of the same issues.

How about doing paper piecing? I did very long flying geese borders for a quilt (UFO - long story) using those printed rolls. The advantage is the size will be perfectly accurate, which is very hard with other methods.

If your pattern requires you to match up the flying geese blocks with other blocks, you will appreciate having them the correct size, because they can’t be trimmed.

BTW, I only do no waste patterns. Somehow those quick methods where you cut off all kinds of triangles are just too wasteful for me.

According to her, in order to get a 3.5"x6.5" unfinished "goose," (a 3"x6" finished goose) you should cut the small squares at 3-7/8" and the large ones at 7-1/4". I haven't made any lately, but I don't remember having a problem with them following her measurements. That's about all the help I can offer. I'm sorry you are getting frustrated. Have some wine. Lois, exactly what I was doing. Exact measurements and all. I may not have been holding my tongue right. Did not get a chance to try more today, busy doing some much needed cleaning. Will give it another whirl tomorrow. Thank you both for your suggestions.

Perhaps a slightly narrower seam.

Do you sew each side in opposite directions? Sometimes that affects the seam.

Will try that and see if that happens. All this testing is using up some ugly fabric that appeared in a bin. Where did that come from?
