To me and many others, rooms look much better when it looks as though the furniture has been collected and curated over time, rather than bought all at once as a set. So toward that end, I'd suggest a dresser/chest that complements rather than matches the other pieces.

When you ask what material or color wood, you really need to post a photo of your bedroom so we can see the existing furniture, the color of the walls, other colors in the room (rug, curtains, etc.).

cadmon, what color is the upholstered bed? You might wanted to get a dresser/chest in a painted finish that co-ordinates with the upholstery fabric.

We just moved and my last house we had a the right paint and the whole "feel" with the room, furniture and bed and rug. Now, it's hard to picture bc we are in a rental, though the room size is great. I do love the furniture, but the bed might eventually change. You've got my mind going now, which is good because I don't feel stuck with the same collection.
