That lamp doesn't work with the aesthetics of the other pieces, IMHO. You like antiques, right? Maybe pix of other areas in your home that make you happy would help us help you. When I see these 2 pieces, I think early American traditional/ eclectic/ Southern Living style. Do please correct me if I'm wrong. It's only then that I can help you shop for a lamp.

EE, haven't you ever bought things that you loved? And then you fit them into your home. Maybe they are not perfect from a magazine-point-of-view. But you still want them in your home. OP stated that they wanted to KEEP the mirror and the cabinet. I took that to mean, "Help me make the most of it."

Sometimes "making the most" of something means putting it somewhere else!

I agree with pattiegoode the OP stated very clearly what she wanted and telling her to get rid of the pieces she obviously likes is not helpful. It becomes very frustrating when people do not listen to what was asked and then to scold her is just simply wrong.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Everyday Elegance on this one. Sometimes you have to re-state the obvious in a particular way to get someone's attention. Whether they choose to listen or not is their choice, but they are on this site soliciting free advice that we all used to charge for. Maybe, just maybe, she could open her mind to just try some of this free advice, maybe the 20+ people know what they are talking about.

That half moon table siggested higher up the page is absolutely hideous...keep away from it. Just a thought, as you like both pieces in your hall.....have you tried hanging the mirror a little higher up.....(I see it is covering part of the light switch). Maybe higher up the wall, even by a couple of inches, would make a difference. Also, have you tried turning it the other way....it looks more rectangular than square, so maybe turned horizontally would help. If you really want to keep both pieces then you need to definitely clear the top of the cabinet, and maybe just have a large shallow bowl, as suggested earlier. Is there an alternative source of lighting, instead of that tiny lamp? Maybe a very tall thin one....one of those modern paper lights...on the floor? Or, dare I suggest, fairy lights....I make mine into a bunch by gathering the lights together, using the flex as a stem, then putting them into a bowl deep enough to hold them in place.....even a fish bowl looks pretty.....minus water and fish, obviously! Phew....I'm exhausted now ;)

I liked the half moon table. I never noticed the mirror touching the light switch. That is a no-no on so many levels...like fire safety for one.

NG-I just went to look at your original pictures again. Although the taller lamp helps it does not solve the whole problem of the cabinet and mirror being the same size and weight and not differentiating/dividing the wall and making something a focal point and interesting. So I came up with a totally different idea than getting rid of the cabinet or painting it or anything else that has already been suggested...How about taking the chinese characters that are by the door and hanging them over where the table in the entrance is and moving the mirror to where they are now? Is that possible or would it throw off the Feng Shui? If you try it I would hang the characters on a diagonal from the kitchen (top) to the door (bottom). I am thinking this would give you both the dimension and focal interest that you need in that space.

Try another framed picture or mirror that you have and see how it may look. I do not believe in buying new till you know what may look best.

The problem with moving the Chinese characters over the table and the mirror to where the Chinese characters are is that the table/characters do not go together at all. Secondly, the mirror would stick out in a doorway and get knocked off the wall.

As soon as I saw your cabinet, I could see why you love it! I also love heavy mirrors with natural finishes. As you noticed, the scale is a bit of a problem, but moving the mirror up will help. If you don't want to repaint the cabinet in black (or maybe red), but you like Asian flare, I immediately thot to suggest an orchid. I have a very realistic faux one that I use to draw the eye upward, and it's horizontal flowers are great for masking scale issues, while drawing different areas into cohesion. It is also fresh and inviting, and makes visitors want to see what else you have in your space. Good luck! Please re-post when you are satisfied! It's obvious that u love your mirror and cabinet; keep the thing u love as u r the one living with them & enjoying seeing them everyday. Try this as suggested before pull the cabinet a little away from the wall, rotate the mirror cross ways and lighten the finish as so not to have that heavy feeling of the mirror crushing the cabinet, also this will take it off of the light switch and a litter higher than how it is now.
if u must place a lamp a taller slender lamp, if not ....if u like blown glass 3. 1 slim 1 round and 1 odd in bold colors to give the entrance that pop! if u like wooden vases still go for odd shapes various sizes and heights i am suggesting a grouping as so to look as u have collected them from different places and r timeless. don't put a clock and a plant......... sigh clocks can be anywhere in the house unless u collect clocks then a small grouping would have that collectible feeling. Same with plants. if not then go with the suggestions above.... 3.... at various heights r large bowl of moth orchids.

Try sitting the large mirror on top of the chest instead of hanging it on the wall. Add a large floor vase in a deep red color alongside the chest and fill it with tall grass type plants.

That's a good idea, Carolina Girl. It will prove once and for all that the mirror is too large for the chest. Your idea about a vase and arrangement of some kind is good - smaller and on top of the chest instead of the mirror. I know there is a perfect spot for that mirror in this house! Where is it? When can we see other options?

I think this is a common problem for most homes. This is what I finally ended up with- I think this is my 6th attempt. If everyone loves it I will go more in depth about the accessories. The art is an Audubon print.

Would two small pendant lights fit on either side of the mirror instead of using a lamp? I once saw this used and it looked beautifully balanced.

I like all your items! The easiest fix I can think of would be to place the lamp on top of a short stack of books (laid flat with bindings facing the room) to add some height and tying a colored ribbon around the plant pot.

I agree the proportions are wrong...painting the cabinets drawers sounds good..What color would go with furniture in the next rooms? Tall lamp may solve it too. And it may all look good but for daily use does it get used and become a dumping ground for stuff? Keys mail etc? Then a tray or something to hold all the junk is a good idea too. I know our front hall table does. LOL Have to work at keeping it cleared. So not to many things on the cabinet top. Have to keep room for the junk! LOL Or is your kitchen counter the dumping ground?

I agree that the mirror is way to large and heavy looking for the cabinet. A smaller round mirror would work well and just relocate that one somewhere else.

I also have a bulky, but not as large, mirror as you in our small entryway. and have been looking for a small 11"x30" table for ever. My mirror is hung horizontally, which was my first thought when I saw your picture.. I like your round framed picture underneath, but not in gold. I would make it a grouping of three and add a tall, skinny metal based lamp as almost everybody else has suggested. Find a piece of ribbon in colors of the rest of your house and tie it around your existing plant. You could also add a lace table runner to add interest without adding another object to clutter up the small area. If you want to add more color without painting the table, find a fun fabric or wallpaper pattern and put it under a glass top. Change the knobs to clear acrylic or splurge on glass.

Square mirror, square cabinet. Add some roundness and height with a lamp. Then a plant of some sort in a chunky container. Then maybe one small trinket item. I know you want to keep the mirror and cabinet. I have not read all comments. But I must say the proportion seems wrong between the cabinet and mirror.

I love the furniture piece and the mirror. I think what you need to do is add height to one of the accessories, there are all the same height, you need to add interest to the composition. Either by replacing the lamp or the plant if you change the plant I would do an orquid to add color with a beautiful container, and if you change the lamp try to find a tall one and get the base in color or the shade in a color that will complement the color scheme in your home.

I agree with those who have encouraged nguyenhuong85 to use what she likes and find a way to make it happen. I also see that the visual balance is "off" because the mirror looks very heavy above the console. I think that something could be done to tone down the mirror a bit so that it works better. How about a dried or silk flower arrangement mounted onto the mirror? It could be a swag at the top, or corner embellishment. It could be changed seasonally, or as the mood strikes. Below are the best images I could find to convey the idea, but I think with a little ingenuity the mirror could look really nice!

since you u like both pieces, this is what I would do...to bring a nice scale to your cabinet.... might cost a little bit but it would be worth the investment. Go to a countertop store where they sell different counters...sometimes you can be lucky and ask if they have any left over pieces from jobs done before hand. I would look for a nice piece if marble, or granite....you can sometimes get these odd pieces for very little cost especially if you talk to the manager one on one. Then measure the top of the cabinet, then measure the width of that wall....get a piece of countertop larger than the top of the cabinet.. maybe an extra two inches on each side, this will balance it, the top will be wider then the mirror. The granite would only need to be glued down then it will be very sturdy. Also I noticed your cabinet and mirror are not centered, that can also confuse the eye. Then invest in a buffet lamp. It is tall and slim. You have a lot of beige so why not buy a lamp shade black! That will not only look so beautiful it will anchor the hall.

Then invest in a tray, place your book and two more old books ontop of each other, having a tray keeps everything tidy and neat. Then take the picture or antique clock and place it next to the books in the tray. Or get a antique frame and put a black and white picture in it... take away the flower all together, it doesn't do anything to
enhance your cabinet.....you can also play with different colors for the mirror...and cabinet... anway I think that would do the trick if you really want to keep the two pieces together... just make the counter wider.....that in itself will balance it out... but I agree with others telling you to get rid of that lamp etc... slim buffet lamp. The mirror is too heavy and bulk looking for your cabinet.

You have a lovely vertical wall to work with. However, this arrangement is not highlighting this and is also poorly balanced. How about a tall vertical mirror instead? Maybe relocate the cabinet in another room.

I agree with most. The mirror is just to large for this area. However your specifications for this project are to keep the mirror and the cabinet. I would like to see you raise the mirror at least 2 inches above the light switches then paint the outside flat edge of the mirror both front and side the same color as the wall. This would tone down it's size. Make a cap or cover from 3/4" plywood that would cover the top and all four edges of the top of the cabinet. You could add an inch to the front and the two sides and two inches to the back. Take this to a sheet metal shop to have them cover it with a copper sheet and solder the 4 corners. then place this on the top of your cabinet. It will make it appear larger and you can move it away from the wall 2 more inches which will in turn eliminate some of the debt of the mirror. Put copper drawer pulls on all the drawers.Place a tall lamp on the left side which will disguise the light switches and a glass vase with a tall flower on the right.

I agree that the mirror doesn't work with the the chest the way that it is. Try hanging it horizontally and see if that gives better proportions. I personally don't like a lot of clutter, so I'd probably put an interesting vase on the chest and leave it at that, maybe fill with some eucalyptus or curly branches or something to add more height and be reflected in the mirror.

First of all -- ghesa1: Love the drawer knob! I have to agree with a combo of everything that's been said. However, not only could the rug be a little more colorful, but I think it could be larger. Perhaps a 3'6" x 5'6" rectangular. The black lamp is too large and heavy. Maybe you could take a look at this lamp from Pottery Barn. Finally, one of the things that's very simple and inviting is FRESH flowers. I believe that they would create colour and interest for your entrance. Take away whatever the clock is sitting on and angle it by the lamp and replace your "plant" with fresh floral (for goodness sake, please don't use dried or silk flowers). That's what I would do, but I'm not a professional and don't have a lot of money.

I think the lamp works fine as long as you like it. Balance it with a long and low accessory next to it, like a shallow bowl. Good job!

I agree to get a smaller mirror, there seems to be plenty of light, so no lamp, I would do a smaller mirror and a rather large floral arrangement and move the rug in front of the dresser for a more welcoming effect

I like the little items on the cabinet but the lamp is too small. In the products section there are some nice copper table lamps. Try the plant on the light switch side, take the book from under the clock and angle it slightly and put a lamp on the right hand side. I like your mirror.

Coming in late but after all the comments I can't say that I didn't like it to begin with. It appeals to me. I can see the "designers" hang ups but if I walked in your home I would totally compliment this arrangement. But! I'm not a designer and would never invite one to my home. ;)

The chest is to small for the mirror. Change one or the other. And designer s stop being so rude. This is a free site. If you don't want to comment, then don't. But being rude to someone asking for advice is just mean.

I love your mirror. I noticed you have two rooms on either side of the wall that the mirror and chest are on. Is there possibly a place for the mirror in one of those rooms? I feel it needs a "dramatic" piece under it to do it justice.

I came late to the discussion but my thoughts are paint the chest of drawers satin black with same color knobs. Leave the mirror color and placement. Take everything off the top of the chest except the lamp and add 1) Either of the the following tall topiaries but stay with a theme, and add a personal piece or two (like the tang horse in the picture) that pulls a bit of color from Both the black chest and mirror frame. If you choose the low, ornate, gold fruit box-swap out the lamp for a tall, thin, with a shade that pulls a color from the fruit i.e. deep purple or burgundy... You're on the right track and it looks lovely. I can email you more picture of these topiaries if you like as well as dimensions. Search Villa Topiary on facebook or Instagram for more pics.

I love your mirror, however the thickness of the frame dwarfs your cute cabinet. This vignette also needs some height and contrast/color. Get a taller lamp, and either paint your plant holder a bright color or get a slightly bigger one in a bright color. Orange, red, teal, bright white?

Perhaps dark drawer pulls could tie the mirror (which I love) in with the cabinet (which I love). Read articles here on Houzz re: foyer décor/purpose/table top design/proportion and shape. Great ideas there. I like your look if it represents YOU. Just tweak for a bit for more 'dimension' and functionality in objects atop cabinet.
