Help me Front Load!

I recently purchased a LG WM3670 front load washing machine with it's matching dryer. Since purchasing the washing machine I notice that my clothes are starting to pill and look worn and faded.

I typically use Tide with Bleach powder for sheets and whites, and Tide F&G pods for clothes which are the same detergents that I was using in my old top load. I am sorting clothes by fabric, closing zippers and buttons, and a lot of clothes are washed inside out. I usually wash clothes in warm water and towels/sheets in hot.

I have tried different cycles, tried adding water or extra rinses, and using the low spin and I don't think anything is helping. I don't feel as if there is anything rough inside of the machine that could be damaging the clothes and the clothes are this way before going into the dryer. Everything just feels rough, including my towels.

Help me come up with a solution because I am not getting new machines anytime soon, so I have to be able to figure this out.

Okay - in all seriousness, this is QUITE COMMON from LG's "el-shitia" washers that are manufactured. It's just one of the countless problems and headaches you'll experience over the next few years. A simple search on Houzz would have turned up a hundred inquiries and threads about these problems.

The drum is designed without fabric preservation is mind, and is overly aggressive to textiles. You'll especially notice this if you compare the water extraction holes, to a Miele or Bosch machine.

Truthfully, the only way around it - is to turn all your clothes inside out, use lower water temperatures & shorter cycle times, as well as lower spin speeds. I'd also seek out Tide Total Care (now called Color Guard) because it has a special enzyme that eats the pills on cotton, and prevents fading.

I'd also buy a fabric shaver. You can get them cheap at Michael's... or Amazon.

Looks like I was wrong - Tide changed the name of the line again from Color Guard to Color Defense. You want this bottle though.

Pilling...was amoung one of my great concerns when I was considering a FL. Tons of complaints on Google about pilling. Thankfully the washer gods figured I'd gone thru enough trial and errors related to washers so I've never had this problem. If I would have I can assure you the washer would have gone back. I have no advice other than agreeing with Rolando. But I would start breathing fire down LG's back. Call them, e-mail them and continue doing so. Dont be nasty or make threats just continue telling them your problem and asking them to address your machines pilling problem.

It sounds like you might be using too much detergent. Try using only 2 TBSP of powder or no more than one pod per load. And add an extra rinse cycle. Your machine also has a "water plus" option you could try. Rough/crunchy feeling laundry/towels means there is detergent residue.

I'd recommend taking a stocking over your hand and feel the drum just to be sure there are no rough spots.

Reminds me of my question. ..OP are you having rough dry clothing or actual pilling??

I believe that the clothes are pilling. I have attached two pictures. The cart shorts are 100% cotton and were washed with other cottons and cotton/polyester blends with a tide pod. The gray pants are a cotton/ployester blend and were washed in a load of similar pants using woolite dark. On each load, I used the delicate cycle on warm with a low spin and extra rinse.

After reading the comments, I measured the powder detergent that I’ve been using and realized that I’ve probaly been using 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of powder detergent instead of 1-2 as I thought. Is it possible that I’ve been underdosing?

Unless you washed something that's shedding that's a terrible case of pilling.

I'd go out and buy that Special Tide. I think it'll really help you. I'd also get a fabric shaver.

I am really particular about sorting clothes. The shorts were brand new mid June. I have bought the same brand of shorts the last three years for my daughter. At first I thought that the quality had gone down, but when I washed some of last years shorts, the same thing happened. I thought that maybe I wasn’t using the right cycles or detergents and others on this forum have recommended LG. I will contact LG for a service call.

I usually try to buy scent free detergents, but I will look at the Tide Color Defense. Would fabric softener help?

Well you can't use fabric softener in the wash cycle.

Is your washer using enough water (insert laugh)? I'd think that a liquid detergent would help lubricate the fabric and help with the clothing rubbing against each other.

Yes call LG. How long have you had this washer?

Seems reasonable regards to detergent that insufficient dosing would lead to more pilling via increased friction between fabrics due to the wash water not being "slippery."

please do not waste your time with LG customer service it will give you days of annoyance, bad mood and high blood pressure with no result
