Kitchen lights for high ceiling

Our kitchen has a high ceiling with 4 fluorescent lightbox. All contractors we interviewed suggest is to change to recess lights. We are concerned the amount of lighting will not be bright enough. The ceiling is 15 feet slope to 9 feet. We don’t mind fluorescent light box but one contractor said they are “dated” and will not look good after we update the rest of the kitchen. Anybody has experience putting recess light in high ceiling?- we wanted the kitchen to be bright

Light on your work surface is important. 450 lumens is recommended. Undercabinet leds are a source which doesn't involve your ceiling. Acuity has 2" recessed units that can output 1500 lumens in various beam angles. Here. Juno has similar 1000 lumen units

I've have mostly seen high/sloped ceilings with pendant lighting. I assume because it lowers the lights to the height where they're the right distance from the counters to be good task lighting.

I've never lived with that set-up, but it's probably worth looking into?
