Kitchen Bay Window design?

last modified: 8 years ago

My husband is mystified why this dining area needs an update only 12 years after we moved in. Anybody recognize Waverly Garden Images Ebony? Congratulations.

We have no budget to replace the table and chairs.

The window treatments look (IMO) dated and fussy, too frilly, and after painting over swamp green with Behr Antique Tin dark gray in the (open floor plan) room adjacent, this fabric is now too green.

Understanding the current answer would be to rip off the fabric and leave the windows naked, I hesitate because with vaulted ceilings, the room echoes a bit. Also, the two center windows have separate blinds and I'd like something to visually unite them.

For what it's worth, this is the new fabric we agreed on.

My proposed alternatives:

1) pinch-pleat, ring hung side drapes only. Metal scroll artwork centered above the two windows (9" high, up to 60" wide) to echo the chairs or could buy "Gather" shown below.

2) Move the existing 2.5" headers shown, up about 6". Sew full-length side panels (not worried about obscuring view). For the center panel, sew a shaped valance hung flat - not gathered.

Thoughts? Preferences? Other alternatives? The ceiling is vaulted, the room adjacent has a 14' ceiling and is open to this room. Finishing is over-the-top white mouldings, knotty hickory cupboards in the kitchen behind.

I really like the fabric. I would suggest fixed roman shades over side drapes

Oops - here's the "Gather" I proposed centering above the two middle windows. Giant fork & spoon or 'wall words' also occurred to me but metal scrolls, although as a rule I don't care for, would work with the dining set.

Sign would overlap the center valances by 8 inches

Fits - wish I could find better quality.

Thanks, typeandrun - I think I could do that. Would it look weird without a fixed roman shade over the middle?

This is the fabric I preferred - we have a midcentury modern coffee table and I'd love to use this Robert Allen Pure Petals (look how huge that pattern is!) but DH was aghast ;-)

Are you keeping the chairs and table? I don't think RA Pure Petals would work with the furniture

Thanks - good to know. Yes, the furniture stays. A battle for another day. Do you have a inspiration link/photo for fixed roman shades?

Yes, I well remember the black Garden Images. I had balloon valances in my master bedroom. Outdated now for sure. My first thought was roman shades for your windows. No drapes. I love the RA Pure Petals.

If you aren't happy with the current dining set, I definitely wouldn't add decorative scrollwork. FWIW, I think the table is fine (I like the country look of the check tablecloth), but I think that it's enough metal scrollwork by itself.

I like the fabric you've chosen. I think roman shades would be my first choice, but side curtain panels would be fine too.

I would take down the window treatments and spend the funds on purchasing a round wood table and chairs to fit the bay space. Your acoustics haven't been helped with the metal leggged chairs.

Thanks BeverlyFLADeziner - DH loves the table so much that when we had a larger house, we bought its twin: yes, we have *two* of them and a dozen matching chairs. I agree with you but they're going nowhere, so I'm attempting to embrace them ;-)

The room in your photo is to die for - thanks so much. I'll see if there's anything I can incorporate.

    Much appreciated!

I would take them down and see how it looks without them.

Does the table presently have a leaf in it? If so, could you take it out to make the top as small as possible and have a round top installed on top, then use your current chairs with it? Round would be such a better shape for your space.

Olychick, thanks so much! As it happens, one of the two tables is round and I could incorporate it instead of this one. Thanks for reminding me.

Yes......round table and no drapes or just panels hanging straight like the picture BeverlyFLADeziner posted.

Old curtains are down, new ones are up.

    • 'Wrought iron' scroll is meant to reference scrolls on the furniture. Not sure how successful that is - seems a little too delicate?
    • Love the simple, statement curtain rods: $85 at West Elm, $45 at Home Depot, $25 (but two trips to find both) at TJ Maxx.
    • Suspect black round place mats or chargers are in my future. Would love 12" caramel-colored tapers (natural beeswax?) but these from Roots are the most substantial I could find, for now.
    • Round table to follow.

Husband was pleasantly surprised at how tall and light everything looks, now. Success!

Thanks so much for your input :-)

You're on a roll! Switch out for the round table and you're set.

That looks so much better! Can't wait to see the round table in place, too. Not sure what you have going on outside these windows (privacy needs, etc), but maybe someday think about bottom up shades that could give you privacy if needed on the lower part of the windows, but would be open at the top for light and a view of the outdoors (sky at least).
