It really depends on how you live. Most people would prefer a casual living area in the larger space across from the kitchen to watch tv from the kitchen and be able to interact during meal prep.

I could seem odd to have the living room area in a space that does feel like it should be the dinning. The biggest area being used for dinning adds to that feeling. Why do want to switch? I see you have bar stools also so your not without an eating area on that side of the space.

would the living room be set up like this then? I have been having so much trouble making the room feel right since it has an awkward layout with the doorways, columns and open to the kitchen. What do I do behind the couch by the windows? Should I get 2 more chairs and just have 4 chairs instead of the couch? The couch is what is throwing me off. This is not where we watch tv, we have a large family room downstairs with a sectional. This is more of a sitting room and where we can read with the kids before bed or play games.

Having open space to live in is essential. There are so many ideas of over-crowded spaces that use way too much furniture. You want to have enough space to move around and keep your ideas fresh so that you are not stuck with one placement forever!

How bout a bench under the window with an end table may be a nice place to take shoes on and off!
