The denser ones are genetic variants. A percentage of the existing named cultivars will be likely to have arisen from seed also.

Actually they're on the pale side, as though needing to be fertilized.

Mr. Negative strikes again!! They look perfectly fine to me. Just lighter new growth, which is very typical.

They are definitely yellowed. No rain for 5 weeks this summer can take the blame! That's also one of the reasons I have my eye on these others. Even through the drought they've stayed a nice dark green. Here's one of a progression from the nice dense to what the rest of the crop looks like

When I first bought my T. canadensis, most people thought it might be a cultivar of some kind, less than 3 months in the ground, everything stretched out 6" and started looking more like the species.

Two years later there's no question.

Not saying all yours will do the same. If there weren't odd occurrences in form and character, where would all the cool cultivars come from? :0)

I'll hold on to them for now and see if they grow out of it or if they're something unique. I'm sure it's obvious how impatient I am... And then there's the question of do we even want any more T. canadensis cultivars!

Brandon, we can never have enough Hemlocks! I love them. I just wish HWA wasn't such a big problem where I live.

It's only a matter of time before they're all gone. We're too small to fight such a big infestation! In Michigan, they're starting in the furthest northern county with sightings and working downward spraying trees until they run out of funding. I expect in the next 10 years they'll all be infested here.. :(
