Is the caudex soft?

It's shriveled, but not soft like rotten soft.

Keep an eye the caudex may recover or rot. Don't keep to wet. Keep warm in shade till you see some change. Good luck! You may lightly mist the leaf. Not the whole plant.

Sounds good. Right now it's inside on a heating mat, which is on a thermostat set to 76°, with my small astrophytum seedlings and cuttings.

It shows just how tough these plants are :-) Hopefully, eventually, I'll be able to post pics of it growing well.

I think it looks slightly less shriveled, but that may be wishful thinking. At least it doesn't look worse :-)

Definitely has a chance. It's a pity that you found it at the end of summer but if you keep it warm and under light to fool it that the days aren't shortening just yet, you may be able to prolong the time before it goes into winter dormancy and give it more reserves to get through winter

It's on a heating mat, under lights. Hopefully, it will pull through. An interesting experiment in resilience! I'm just amazed that it still head a tiny green leaf after 10 months of lying bare root in the dark.
