September 2018 - How’s your build?

Wow a new month! And I think we have a few people finishing up this month so there should be a lot to see. Happy September.

Tough to see, but that is pallets of block on the house pad. Footers are poured, ~20% of the block has been laid. The electric company is giving me fits, but it's progress.

Nice Alison! I see your sinks haven't been installed yet. My sinks went this week... before my counters (the counters are next week I hope). Wonder what is normal...

I’m sure it’s all dependent on the type of sink you have? Who knows. I do recall in our last house when we redid the kitchen they put in counter first too.

Over counter sinks can be instal later.

I posted earlier this month, and the framing wasn’t even complete yet. But now it’s starting to look like an actual house!! Windows, siding, and doors are just about complete. Rough plumbing is complete, well is dug, septic is being put in as I type, and the rough electrical is about halfway done. Crazy to think how far we’ve come!

That looks very nice a13xxa. Our rough electrical and plumbing have been done for 2 months but the outside hasn't been touched yet so its interesting to see your exterior so far along to me.

What countertops are majority of you going with? I was all set to go with granite and marble, but all this downtime with the cabinet guy has me reconsidering. DH wants to use some quartz.

    Tenisha.....why are you reconsidering?

    Ours are all quartz
We are also doing all quartz except for the outdoor kitchen which will be granite
  • 7 years ago
Some random things! Insulating is just about finished. Drywall and siding to be complete next week.

Now I must focus on paint colors, appliances, and light fixtures. I bought the big paint chip thing at Sherwin Williams..it’s so fun to look.

I know a lot people prefer a large single bowl sink, but I just love a double bowl (one side bigger than the other). I still use one side as a mini bath to bathe our 1 year old :)

    Cabinets!

Finally have a nice update to contribute for this month.
Our trim/wainscoting has been started, tile in the master bathroom/ guest bathroom/ laundry room has been put down, we now have a kitchen and bar area as well and our built-in lockers have been added to the mud room!
Nidnay, DH wants the quartz because I like granites that have a lot of character and veins. He finds them busy. He likes the simplicity of the quartz slabs that he’s seen. I’m getting my way on pretty much everything so I’m willing to consider it.

My update so far is that the basement floor was poured this week, but the framers moved back from starting next week until a week after that, which is first of October. Really hoping for a dry fall. The windows and mason are ready the second week of October and if the roof can be done then too, then we'll be semi-dried in. Fingers crossed.

amiebeth01 - tell me about the flooring in your great room. I love them, were they pre-finished?

    So many nice cabinets.

Tenisha B., we are going with Naica Quartzite. It looks like this:

    [https://www.houzz.com/photos/stone-showcase-kitchens-contemporary-boston-phvw-vp~115194200[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/stone-showcase-kitchens-contemporary-boston-phvw-vp~115194200)

It is very similar Taj Mahal quartzite but less brown. It is a beautiful stone especially in person. DH and I both thought that granite was too busy and quartz was a bit too plain. We liked the look of marble but wanted something harder/ more durable, so quartzite was the obvious choice. However, we are doing pure white quartz in our bathroom because we needed some plain to go with the marble in the shower.

If you do a quartz in the kitchen, you can do a more interesting backsplash. We are doing everything else in the kitchen very plain because of the movement in the stone.

Everyone has such wonderful updates! We meet with our builder this weekend to finalize exact location of house on the lot. Lots of grading occurred this week!

Tenisha, we also have all quartz. I like granite and marble and think they are both beautiful, but I wanted a pure white with no veining or color variation for most of the house, so that is why I chose Quartz. A couple of rooms have black.

CCpark0, the floor is engineered wood. It’s from the Novella collection by Hallmark floors. It’s Hemingway (oak). I really love it! so far its holding up fantastically to my dogs’ nails. A lot better than the traditional hardwood we had in our old house anyway, and one of our dogs is quite large.

We have a great dane (#150) and I'm a little concerned that he's going to destroy the hickory engineered flooring that is going in. Hes real old and likely won't be with us much longer but I'm still anxious. I absolutely wouldn't have picked it if he was young.

All the homes are looking great!

Between the rain and/or wind the roof as pretty much come to a standstill. Here's what it looks like right now. A windstorm a couple days ago also damaged an unused sheet of steel, picked the top one right off the stack. (The power went out for 21 hours and 24 minutes at home, too.) We're waiting to buy replacement steel to after we get all the rest up just in case.

And because there was more wind today DH and I decided to start on the garage walls. We got nearly two 12 foot sections done before the drizzle started. The cross bracing comes off after the steel siding goes up. These sections were pretty easy as there are no windows or doors. For those who are interested, the horizontal boards are called girts. Rain probable tomorrow so it's doubtful anything will be done at all.

Counter tops were delivered and placed in place late yesterday; they are installing them today and may take a couple of days or more to complete

A few pics below, look messy since they are not cleaned

Pinebaron....your kitchen is huge....what’s the length of your stove wall? It looks like at least 28 feet or so. Love all that space.

Priming and ceilings are done. Well is ready to get hooked up as it is finally up to the house. Septic will hopefully be done this week, but who knows. Electric line will be hooked up end of this week too. Got an email from the site supervisor and they said they are trying for a CO on November 16. We know TRYING is the operative word here. Will settle for end of year though that is cold and snow time here in MN.
Got to say that this has been going pretty smoothly. Not to say we haven’t had fights with the builder. We have. Our first one was the first week of the build. However unpleasant that was, they got the picture that we are NOT pushovers and it’s been respectful since. And they know we won’t settle for less than what we think is good enough. And our standards are pretty high. . Happily we haven’t seen much that needed to be changed. Quality is good. The excavator is the only sub we didn’t think did his job well. Would never recommend him to another person for anything. So much to do between now and end of November.... we aren’t selling our house until we move out, so we have a little wiggle room.

Things move along and then stop it is so frustrating, they are doing the lath and I pull up an the worker is taking a roll of chicken wire and 2 rolls of the black paper I ask if he is done and says no he has to go to the Doctor. I call my husband who says they always take stuff but this is the company that is charging us 1500 more because we decided to enclose the eaves I am frustrated and he never came back today.
I also got the price on the doors and I am afraid that my husband is going to make me change the door knobs as they are a bit over 3,000.00 I should want to change them too but I really want them but I would rather have the better doors so I will wait and see if we can do both.

Following..loving all the photos and updates! Just found this thread and having never built a house..find so much useful information1

Claudia Castillo - our door knobs were expensive too (Emtek crystal). We still kept them but are buying them in small batches as at this point, our remaining to-do's are cash out the door. So I've been buying them a little at time. I still have 7 more to buy and will be placing an order for 4 more today. We've lived in our house for a year now! But I love those door knobs and wouldn't have been happy with anything else.

gthigpen, we are using the same my husband got a bid for doors and baseboards including installation and it was cheaper than mine but the doors are better and I really want those crystal knobs. What knobs did you use Till you could swap them out? My husband doesn’t like to spend money and then switch out and spend more lol but I was thinking downstairs first and then upstairs.
Started September 21st, 2017. Still not in, but very close! Never thought it would take this long!

    Framing is moving along.

It’s so great to see the house taking shape. We have been looking at our plans for so many years...gone through so many changes, long delays due to my health issues. I can’t believe it’s actually happening!

Ktdh....awesome.....and look at those pretty puffy clouds you can see from your home!
    susandefede.....love it all!

susandefede !!! love love love! Hope you're finished soon!

Claudia Castillo - We got Emtek Lowell Crystal in ORB. We never put any on at all, so have just been living with doors with no knobs. The only one we did immediately was the powder room so guests could have the option to lock the door. For the rest of us, if the door is closed we just knock before entering. It never occurred to me to buy cheap knobs just to replace them later.

gthigpen can I ask did you buy them online the door guy says he is giving me a good deal at 76.80 each
  • 7 years ago
Drywall! We are really moving along and I hope it stays that way.

    Very pretty susandefede

Island was installed today and surprise, surprise it’s not right. You would think that when someone is beyond late that they would make sure the product exceeds your expectations.

Claudia Castillo - That is a good price. But I was able to find the ones I wanted at Homestead Hardware for $75 a piece. They had the best prices I could find on the internet or anywhere locally.

Tenisha B. - Your island looks great. What is not right about it? That really sucks they didn't get it right.

gthigpen it’s always just small little details with the cabinet guy. I ended up accepting most of the mistakes they’ve made thus far because it still looks good. The island has the wrong size corbels and the pull-out trashcan section is the wrong size.
At our final meeting, my ETA was 3 weeks for vanities and then an additional 2 for everything else.....that was in late June.
We started In January. Lots of progress in the last week. 2 more months left!
Lisa W....love those gorgeous wood floors.

Kimberly.....why couldn't they bury a propane tank? That's done all the time.

@nidnay. Thanks. Kitchen section is almost a square. The stove wall is close to 24’ and the section is 26’ long. We are so looking forward to moving in and using the new kitchen and appliances. We strived to create a zero chaos kitchen with huge open and unobstructed spaces with functioning areas not interfering with each other even if all used at the same time.

    Backsplash going in. Love it’s

    @Alison: Looking good!

susandefede. I love your kitchen. Heck I seem to love everyone's kitchen! Probably because mine is still possibly years away. The weather is not cooperating, you just can't put up huge sheets of roofing steel with winds gusting over 20 mph. Not without risking permanently ruining the steel or decapitation! This is how it looked a few days ago. We've only been able to add 2 more sheets. Today we hope to start on the left side of the reverse gable, then when that's done there will be no more angel cuts and just straight sheets. I don't think there is any way this roof is going to be done by winter.

Buzz- I am really impressed that your family is building your home. I enjoy watching the progress and I am hopeful that the weather holds out for the roof to get finished. Stay safe!

Thanks wysmama, Unfortunately, it looks about the same, just one more piece of radiant barrier and only one piece of steel. DH has the other edge of the barrier held in place with 2x4s, but we need that second piece of steel on top to ensure it doesn't tear in the wind.
