And yes, Anglophilia - it is basically like a townhouse. we are in a very urban neighborhood, so lots of sidewalk traffic in front of the house.

Who helped you with the blinds? Didn't they tell you they would not offer privacy at night?

If you can see through the blinds during the day (I can see that from your photo) then people will be able to see in at night when the lights are on inside.

I like drapes, but with that window recess, if you have enough fabric to cover the whole window, your stacked drapes will cover a chunk of the windows when the drapes are open. It will also be a pain to climb over the sofa to open/close the blinds every day. The height would also make manual open/close a bit hard. You could go motorized, but will need to spend quite a bit more.

What you have looks like they are solar blinds. You might not need to go to black-out, but might be able to find an opaque one that allows filtered light during the day but still blocks visibility at night. I know Hunter Douglas has several levels.

I might have looked at an opaque bottom-up-top-down option, so you could walk around naked if you wanted too and still see daylight in the upper part!

Hey, I used to clean my house in my underwear in my younger years! No danger of ruining clothes with cleaning products and then shower up right after cleaning the bathroom! ;-)

Tara I would absolutely go back to the company you got them from and say you need something less sheer. Knowing where you live I also 100% agree you need something on there! I think the style of your house is well suited to drapes, when you want the bite the pricey bullet on it.

It looks like You could by with cafe style shutters or drapes,(basically the bottom half of your windows) and that would provide privacy, Unless you have two story homes across the street. The shades you have are solar shades, which don’t provide complete privacy. What Did your window treatment professional tell you about them?

Full length drapes would look lovely in your room and give privacy. You mentioned the price and that sounds reasonable. I’m not sure what fullness ratio they estimated, but you could get by with 2 times drapery fullness in order to cut down on the stack size as well as cost.

We have developed a love for Roman shades in our house. We live on six acres so privacy isn’t really a concern but it is nice to block out that early morning sun! Something like that might give a nice layer of privacy when you want it, but you can open and enjoy the view from your windows otherwise.

Personally, I would purchase some curtains and a drapery rod from Pottery Barn or another store and install them myself. If you aren't handy, then seek out a friend or relative that can help. You can get the layered look for a lot less than $3k and it will look great.

Annie - I am not at all handy. I was planning to do wall mounted curtains from one of the big box stores, but ceiling mounted as our designer suggests seems a bit overwhelming as a DIY project.

I am still going to explore that idea though.
