Master Bedroom/Ensuite on 2nd or 3rd floor?

Help! Having trouble deciding whether to place Master Bedroom/ensuite on 2nd or 3rd floor. We decided to place it on the 2nd floor for a few reasons: the windows at the front of the home (east facing — sunrise!) are nice and big (which we’ll turn into a Juliette balcony). That same side upstairs is a sloped roof with a much smaller window. The back of the second floor has a large patio; upstairs will have nice big window but facing lots of neighbours (downtown Toronto). And just less stairs. We thought we had made a good decision but EVERYONE who we share our plans with is shocked that we are not placing our ensuite/bedroom on the 3rd floor.

Are we making the right decision??

I can’t imagine why anyone would want a master on the 3d floor. I hate the fact that mine is on the 2d. I invariably forget something & dread having to go upstairs to get it.

What would you put on the second floor in lieu of the master. I would think it would be preferable to not have to climb two flights of stairs to access your bedroom - many people put masters on the first floor if possible.

Long walk to the loo in the middle of the night in either case. Also no way to answer without knowing what is on the first two floors. Kids, pets, ages etc.

First floor is an open concept kitchen, dining and living. Basement has family room, bathroom, laundry. Currently we have 2nd floor as Master bedroom/ensuite. And our 2 girls each have a bedroom and share washroom on the 3rd floor (it’s the floor on the right side on the plans).

The biggest reason for putting the bedroom/ensuite on the 3rd is privacy. If we had our bedroom on the 3rd our girls (and their friends) would never have to walk past our bedroom to get to the main floor or their bedrooms. It would also give us more floor space and it would eliminate the need for a common hallway.

If this is your “forever” home a main floor master is what you should be planning I sure would not want to climb to the 3rd floor to go to bed ever unless I was 12 maybe. I agree the walk to the toilet from the 3rd floor one is ridiculous.

We are a new family so we are not even thinking of this as a “forever” home or not. It’s really our first home. It’s a semi 100+ year old home in downtown Toronto; master on the first floor is not an option. Walking 14ft to get to a bathroom is perfectly fine for us. Mobility isn’t an issue for us.

My only concern is if we are limiting our privacy by having our master on the 2nd. Do the pros outweigh this con.
