It's not an almond - zone 5 is too cold for them (flowering or ornamental almond is a different plant). And the fruit is quite skinny compared to a peach, has very litte 'meat' to it and stays green and will split open when the almond is ripe.

looks like an overripe peach that was never harvested, no idea what variety though.

I once had a peach rootstock that bore similar fruit, the peaches pretty much stayed small and hard until they fell.

gardengal48 -- the almond tree is much hardier than most people realize, some varieties being quite similar to peach in terms of hardiness. They grow very well in my zone 6, but since they flower even earlier than peach they rarely set fruit. When they do fruit, the squirrels make quick work of the crop here.
