Variegated ceaonthus here in SoCal are listed to be placed in part shade because the variegation can make the plant more sensitive to burning. Not sure what zoney you are in ...

I have my lovely plant sited in a part shade location. I was worried it wouldn’t get as much sun as it liked, but after what you’ve said, I think it’ll be a perfect place for it. So thank you for your comment!

Not sure what has happened to the zone designations that used to follow our “names”. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area mid-Peninsula and up against the western hills. I can never figure out just what Sunset Zone I am in, but it’s colder because my garden is in a low spot.
