How were the recessed cedar siding areas achieved?

I love the details and strategic use of natural materials in this house!
It appears that on the 2nd floor, the cedar siding is recessed from the adjacent Hardie siding to give it additional contrast. How is this detail done in this case? Is the Hardie installed over furring strips on top of the Tyvek (or other WRB) in a rain screen application or was this done during framing where the Hardie areas are furred out using framing lumber? Thanks!!
