You could try to find a table with the same hight and width to fit directly behind the island, but I don't know if you'd be happy with how that would look. I like the idea of replacing the stone with wood. It could tie in really nicely with your wooden dining set.

I would replace your kitchen table and chairs with a counter height table and chairs. That way if guests want to hang out in the kitchen they can sit there and be higher up, more at eye level with you. I think one of the reasons people don't like to sit at a table in that scenario is they would be so much lower and kind "out of the action" so to speak.

Bummer someone talked you out of your original good idea.

There's plenty of room for sitting by adding a new countertop. It would be a good idea to get a new countertop & attractive seating. Get it right the next time. Done. Enjoy.

@ felizlady- Okayyy, you don't, but obviously the OP does because it's the point of her dilemma. Someone already talked her out of it once, why are doing the same?

I was also going to suggest a console or narrow kitchen table and butt it up to the island. Another kind of funky idea could be to install a drop-leaf wooden table top to the back of the island. Flip it up and pull the dining chairs over when you anticipate folks gathering around the island, drop it down when you need more room around the dining table.

This is an ikea kitchen and the breakfast bar would look nice in your kitchen. I have seen them done with thick glass also.

You mentioned kids. I would build low rather than high.
