It reminds me of prairie style homes.

We just call them splits where I live. Lots of additions/gut remodels being done in my area. Generally speaking the side with the garage is left unchanged (well, gutted to the studs and upgrade electrical/plumbing, but nothing done to the structure). The other side is expanded - always in the back and up (depending on the size, master + laundry + office/bedroom), sometimes to the side as well (budget and zoning dependent), sometimes a basement below the addition in the back. Yours looks bigger than what ours start out as (which is 1400 sq ft), and then expanded to about 2600-3000 sq feet. The originals are from the early 50s, and almost all of the ones being sold in original condition are being renovated/expanded this way - sometimes a flip, sometimes by the new owners.
