San Diego home needs a facelift

We recently replaced our old cracked driveway and walkway with pavers and replaced our roof with concrete tIles. Now the siding and foundation landscape looks very sad. Trying to decide on Hardie lap siding or shingles. Can’t make a decision on color either. I’m concerned the horizontal lap siding may make the house look too squat? Suggestions please!
